Wolves still surround Lithuania, enemies that long for our downfall — but I shall not stray from the path down which I have started. I will rule as my father did — and, one day, I shall surpass even him.
—Outro of In the Shadow of the Throne

Jogaila (c. 1352/1362 – 1 June 1434), later Władysław II Jagiełło, is a cavalry hero unit in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Dawn of the Dukes. He was Grand Duke of Lithuania (1377–1434) and then King of Poland (1386–1434), first alongside his wife Jadwiga until 1399, and then sole ruler of Poland. As a hero, he cannot be converted and can regenerate health.

Campaign appearances[]

Algirdas and Kestutis[]

  • In the Shadow of the Throne: Jogaila is initially imprisoned by Kestutis and needs to be ransomed by his supporters. After this, he will lead a coup against Kestutis and Vytautas, killing the former.

Jadwiga[]

  • The Matter of the Crown: Jogaila appears briefly after the Krakowites cow the rebellious dukes, arriving in Poland to meet Jadwiga.
  • Star of the Poles: Jogaila joins Jadwiga in subjugating Galicia. He also propagates conversion of Lithuanian pagans under his rule.
  • Duel of the Dukes: Jogaila and Jadwiga have to contend with Vytautas' rebellion in Lithuania, after the rebellion of remaining pagan nobles.
  • The Siege of Vilnius: Jogaila comes to the defense of Vilnius, alongside Jadwiga and Vytautas.
  • The Fruits of Her Labor: Jogaila leads the Polish army invading Prussia, along with Vytautas leading the Lithuanian army.

Jan Zizka[]

  • Courage and Coin: Jogaila leads the Polish army invading Prussia, along with Vytautas leading the Lithuanian army and Zizka leading the Bohemian mercenaries.

Victors and Vanquished[]

  • Charlemagne: Originally, Charlemagne was a modified Jogaila, set on founding the Carolingian empire in central Europe. He was changed to use Charlemagne's own hero unit in an update.
  • Ragnar: Alfred of Wessex is a renamed Jogaila, commanding a small army in Wessex.

History[]

He is the narrator in the Algirdas and Kestutis campaign (he is the son of Algirdas and nephew of Kestutis) and in the campaign epilogue of Jadwiga (he is her husband and king in law of Poland, Władysław II Jagiełło). Jogaila was the last pagan ruler of medieval Lithuania. After he became King of Poland, as a result of the Union of Krewo, the newly formed Polish-Lithuanian union confronted the growing power of the Teutonic Order. The allied victory at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, followed by the Peace of Thorn, secured the Polish and Lithuanian borders and marked the emergence of the Polish–Lithuanian alliance as a significant force in Europe. The reign of Władysław II Jagiełło extended Polish frontiers and is often considered the beginning of Poland's Golden Age.

Trivia[]

  • When Jogaila dies, he refunds 38 gold. This is a reminiscent of the Burgundians' Knight bonus in the beta.
  • Jogaila appears as an AI player name for two civilizations, the Lithuanians and the Poles. For the latter, he uses his Polish regnal name Wladyslaw II Jagiello.
