Joan of Arc or Jeanne d'Arc is a hero unit in Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and a leader featured in the The Hundred Years War campaign in Age of Empires IV.
Age of Empires II[]
Joan of Arc is a cavalry hero in Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. She is also available in the Scenario Editor. As a hero, she cannot be converted and can regenerate health (since The Conquerors onward).
Joan has her own dedicated campaign, in which she is always a must-survive unit. In the first scenario (An Unlikely Messiah), she appears in her unmounted form, as Joan the Maid.
Ability[]
Joan of Arc could also heal units (for a brief period between the release of The Mountain Royals and update 99311) at 3 hit points per second. She had the "permission" to heal since The Age of Kings, but the engine did not allow military units to heal.
This was accidentally fixed with the removal of the drawback with the introduction of the Warrior Priest. However, as a bug, she visually glitched to her Joan the Maid form while healing, and had no actual healing animation, rather just standing still in her idle animation. With update 99311, this ability was removed.
There is also another error: if the cursor is hover over allied units, it will show the healing icon, despite being impossible. Originally, the unit was given the ability to heal, but never assigned the Monk unit class, only cavalry.
Campaign appearances[]
- The Maid of Orleans: After gaining the Dauphin's favor, Joan leads an army to lift the siege of Orleans.
- The Cleansing of the Loire: Joan of Arc leads her army into the Loire Valley, to reclaim it from the English.
- The Rising: Joan of Arc leads her army north to reclaim Rheims, so that the Dauphin can be crowned as King of France.
- The Siege of Paris: Joan of Arc leads the French forces to besiege Paris, and later to retreat to Compiègne before being captured by the Burgundians.
- The Maid Falls: Joan of Arc is garrisoned in Compiègne. Phillip needs to capture her, in order to defeat the French armies.
Stephen: Matilda of Boulogne, Stephen's wife, is a renamed Joan of Arc. She helps Stephen reclaim control over England.
Trivia[]
- She is the first hero unit who has two different character models. She is joined by:
- El Cid (since The Conquerors)
- Frederick Barbarossa (since The Forgotten)
- Le Lai in Rise of the Rajas
- Ivaylo in The Last Khans
- Jadwiga in Dawn of the Dukes
- Babur (since Dynasties of India)
- Ismail in The Mountain Royals
- The unit model edited from a beta model of the Byzantine Cataphract, replacing its head (originally covered with a helmet) with Joan's. It was later used for the Boyar in Age of Empires II: Forgotten Empires.
- Despite being portrayed as a powerful cavalry unit, Joan herself never participated in actual combat and mostly served as a standard bearer and morale booster for the French army. She declared at her trial that she had never killed a person, in combat or otherwise.
Age of Empires IV[]
“ | The Maid of Orléans. Effective against most units. | ” |
—Age of Empires IV description |
Jeanne d'Arc appears in Age of Empires IV as a heavy melee cavalry, despite being described as a heavy melee infantry. She appears in the The Siege of Orléans and The Battle of Patay scenarios of the The Hundred Years War campaign in Age of Empires IV.
