The Javelin Rider is a cheap and effective ranged cavalry unit available in the Commerce Age to both African civilizations. They have an exceptionally good multiplier against Heavy Cavalry in melee, functioning like a hybrid of a Dragoon and Musketeer.

Originally, Javelin Riders had 210 hit points, train in 40 seconds, and had a x3.0 melee multiplier against artillery. With update 43871, Javelin Riders have 190 hit points, train in 35 seconds, and have a x2.5 melee multiplier against artillery.
Originally, Javelin Riders had a x5.0 melee multiplier against heavy cavalry and a x3.5 melee multiplier against Coyote Runners. Although it is not listed in the patch notes, with update 43871, Javelin Riders have a a x4.5 melee multiplier against heavy cavalry and a x3.1 melee multiplier against Coyote Runners.

For much of the medieval and early modern periods, the dominant style of mounted warfare in East Africa involved mobile light cavalry armed with javelins or other multipurpose weapons.
