Ranged cavalry. Good against cavalry, particularly in melee.
—In-game description

The Javelin Rider is a ranged light cavalry unit in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals that can be trained by both the Ethiopians and the Hausa at the War Camp.

Overview[]

The Javelin Rider is a cheap and effective ranged cavalry unit available in the Commerce Age to both African civilizations. They have an exceptionally good multiplier against Heavy Cavalry in melee, functioning like a hybrid of a Dragoon and Musketeer.

Changelog[]

The African Royals[]

  • Originally, Javelin Riders had 210 hit points, trained in 40 seconds, and had x3.0 melee multiplier vs artillery. With update 43871, they have 190 hit points, train in 35 seconds, and have x2.5 melee multiplier vs artillery.

History[]

For much of the medieval and early modern periods, the dominant style of mounted warfare in East Africa involved mobile light cavalry armed with javelins or other multipurpose weapons. Mounted javelineers' versatility allowed them the choice of fighting from range or engaging in a melee depending on the situation.
