| —In-game description | ||
The Japanese Wolf is a huntable predator introduced in Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear. It can be found on several Japanese-themed random maps as a replacement for the standard Wolf, sometimes being replaced by Black Bears. As with the Grey and Arctic Wolves, Japanese Wolves will attack any nearby workers on sight. It is slower than the standard Grey Wolf, but faster than the Arctic Wolf.
Compared to regular Grey Wolves, Japanese Wolves are noticeably more slender, as well as slightly browner in color.
History[]
| “ | Scientific name -- Canis lupus hodophilax Size -- 50-150 lbs. Diet -- deer, caribou, elk, cattle, small mammals The Japanese wolf, a now-extinct subspecies of wolf, was last officially sighted in Nara Prefecture in 1905 CE. Wolves hold a significant place in Japanese mythology—one of the most well-known tales is that of the senbiki ōkami, a mythical pack of wolves said to roam mountain roads at night. Although once revered in Japanese culture, the Japanese wolf was driven to extinction by a combination of rabies outbreaks and human poaching during the Meiji Restoration period. Some reports claim that the wolf may still survive in Japan's most remote regions, but no conclusive evidence has been found to support these sightings. |
