Best not to think about him.
—In-game description

The Invisible Demon is a special hero unit available only in the Scenario Editor of Age of Empires and The Rise of Rome. The icon for the unit is the same as the Heavy Cavalry. The Invisible Demon shares its death animation and cadaver with the Priest. Despite this, it is classified as an infantry unit and benefits from infantry upgrades.

The unit lacks a sprite, so it is invisible and unselectable, but other units can attack it if it is in their Line of Sight. Like other military units, the Invisible Demon is visible on the mini map and automatically approaches enemies in its Line of Sight. However, it is not able to inflict damage even though it has a base attack of 20. Unlike human players, CPU players can properly move around the Invisible Demon, but it will still not be able to attack.

A single Invisible Demon under the control of the second player appears in the original version of the The Siege of Athens scenario of the Glory of Greece campaign.

The Invisible Demon is also available in the Scenario Editor of the Definitive Edition. It is removed from the game in Return of Rome.

Trivia[]

  • The unit is only selectable during its death animation. When selecting one's own dying Invisible Demon, the selection sound of a horse cavalry unit can be heard.
  • Its behavior is comparable to that of Archimedes, who also moves toward enemy units despite lacking a proper attack. But while Archimedes occasionally deals 1 damage in The Rise of Rome, the Invisible Demon never does so.
