Influence is a sixth type of resource introduced in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals. It is only available to African civilizations.

Unlike most other resources, there is no way to immediately gain or lose influence through Market trading. Influence is gathered through the following methods:

  • Passive generated by owning livestock (0.15 inf/sec; 0.3 inf/sec with upgrade); fattened animals trickle faster (0.65 inf/sec upgraded + fattened)
  • Passive generated by owning a Trading Post build on a Minor civilization settlement
  • Switching experience or other resources to influence at a Trading Post build on a Trade Route
  • Special technologies, age-ups or shipments
  • Hausa Universities can generate influence. Having a Trading Post, Town Center and/or Palace nearby increases their rate.
  • Ethiopian Mountain Monasteries can toggle a percentage of the coin mined to influence. The rate is global and not individual to every Mountain Monastery.
  • Ethiopians also get a little bit of influence when killing enemy military units (~1.5% of the unit cost). Killing enemy Villagers grant no influence.
