This article is about the hero in Age of Empires II. For the wild animal, see Wolf.

The Hunting Wolf is a hero infantry which appears in Age of Empires II and in Age of Empires since Return of Rome. It appears in several campaigns and is available in the Scenario Editor. As a hero, it cannot be converted and can regenerate health (since The Conquerors).

Like other wolves, the Hunting Wolf has two different speeds (walking and running) but they cannot be selected and the running speed is only activated when it is ordered to attack. Unlike wolves, the Hunting Wolf is not classified as an animal, but an infantry. As such, it benefits from most infantry upgrades.

Despite the Wolf being a hero unit, and its portrait showcasing a glow, it does not have the golden glow in-game that other heroes, including Ornlu the Wolf, have.

The unit also exists with identical attributes in the Age of Empires game mode introduced in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Return of Rome.

When Extended Unit Stats is enabled, unlike other regenerating units, the Hunting Wolf's stats do not show the regeneration symbol and value. The case is the same for Ornlu the Wolf.

Ivaylo[]

Kotyan Khan[]

  • Raising the Banners: Several Hunting Wolves are owned by Local Cuman Tribes.
  • The Battle at the Kalka River: Kotyan's forces get a Hunting Wolf upon reaching the Cuman base in the west. Allied Cuman tribes also have a couple of Hunting Wolves.

Tamerlane[]

  • Amir of Transoxiana: There are several (gaia) Hunting Wolves among the steppe tribes that will join Tamerlane.

  • Finehair: The elkhound Fenrir is a Hunting Wolf that can be found close to Harald's town.

Battle for Greece[]

  • The Battle of Marathon: Modified Hunting Wolves serve as wolves in Ornucles' pack harassing the town of Oropos and must be killed to gain its support.

Trivia[]

  • The Hunting Wolf does not have any attack bonuses, not even 0. As such, it cannot benefit from infantry upgrades providing attack bonuses, like Arson and Chieftains.
  • In Return of Rome, the Hunting Wolf uses the icon for a generic Wolf, instead of the icon with the golden glow characteristic for hero units.
