—In-game description
The Hundun (混沌) is a myth unit in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars available to the Chinese at the Temple if they Age up to the Mythic Age with Huangdi. It is one of the Four Perils from Chinese mythology, depicted as a faceless, six-legged, four-winged creature personifying chaos. Despite having wings, which it uses to hover above the ground, it is not a flying unit, and is subject to the same movement restrictions as other land units.
Chaotic Fear (Passive): Terrifies enemies, forcing them to flee in random directions. (Affects enemy human soldiers and non-Titan myth units in area of radius 6 from self for 5 seconds, max 25 units, recharge time: 40 seconds)
Banish (Charged): Temporarily sends all human and myth units within a conical area into a void. (Banishes human soldiers, trade units, non-Titan myth units, and workers in a cone of 30° up to range 8 for 3 seconds, dealing 30 divine damage (2× multiplier vs. myth units, 0.25× vs. heroes). Recharge time: 20 seconds)

Myth technologies[]
Specific[]
Power of Chaos: Upgrades Hundun, granting +200% Banish ability damage.
The Hundun is a powerful, faceless myth unit that is strong against both units and buildings due to its decent crush attack, high hit points, and decent armor. It also boasts two powerful special abilities. The first one, Chaotic Fear, scares away nearby enemy units and forces them to run away in random directions. This can be used to disperse a meat shield, allowing the player's own units to pick out individual units more easily. Alternatively, it can also be used to deter an enemy raid. The second one, Banish, temporarily ejects all enemy units in a conical area out of existence, dealing moderate to major damage to the banished enemy units (especially if they are myth units). This ability can easily take out a group of human soldiers and myth units who have already been weakened, while any survivors temporarily become unable to attack and further open to follow-up attacks from the player's own troops.
Upon researching Power of Chaos, the Hundun deals even more damage with its Banish ability, allowing it to take out groups of weakened human soldiers easily. The increased damage from this ability is enough to instantly kill a group of villagers, assuming they are not Citizen Heroes.
While the Hundun has a lot of hit points, this is also balanced out by its low movement speed of 3.5. As with all myth units, the Hundun is weak against heroes, who are immune to both of its special abilities. Likewise, the Hundun's low movement speed also tends to make it a target for fast melee myth units like the Yazi and Anubite, both of which are capable of quickly catching up to it quickly with their respective special abilities.
One of the 'Four Perils' or 'Four Great Malevolent Beasts' in Chinese legend, the Hundun is a chaotic, faceless being. It has four wings and six feet, but is typically a slow moving beast. The creature shares similarities with the Dijiang from the Classic of Mountains and Seas.
The Hundun is said to understand human nature, avoiding virtuous people while befriending the vicious.

Trivia[]
Its in-game Latin scientific name means "Tea Pig".
In the Pillars of the Gods campaign, the Hundun is not portrayed as evil, unlike the other Perils, the Taotie, the Taowu, and the Qiongqi. In the opening cinematic of the campaign, it is seen patrolling the city alongside the Huangdi's troops and the Auspicious Beast Baihu. In the scenario The God Trap, a captured Hundun is kept imprisoned by Huang Zhaowu's troops, alongside other forces loyal to the Huangdi. Upon freeing it, Cangjie introduces it as such: This is a Hundun, a being of pure chaos. Our enemies trapped it with magic to prevent it from using its powers.
