Hrolf the Ganger is an infantry hero available in the Scenario Editor in Age of Empires II. He is based on the first Viking ruler of Normandy named Rollo and sometimes known as Göngu-Hrólfr. In-game, he is represented by a Berserk. As a hero, he cannot be converted and can regenerate health (since The Conquerors).

Like other infantry units, Hrolf the Ganger is affected by all technologies that affect infantry as well as any other bonuses that affect them.

Campaign appearances[]

Victors and Vanquished[]

  • Finehair: Guthrom, Finehair's uncle, is a renamed Hrolf. He assists Harald in conquering Norway.
  • Komnenos: One of the Varangian Guards defending Emperor Nikephoros is a renamed Hrolf the Ganger.
  • Ragnar: Hrolf the Ganger is stationed in Norway. He will join Ragnar upon being discovered and complete a saga of Chronicles of the Dukes of Normandy.
  • Robert: Rollo rules in Normandy. While a major rival of Robert, he can be allied like any other duke. He values military strength and will ally with Robert if he fields large armies.

Rollo also appears in Ironside, but is instead a modified Aethelfrith.

History[]

Rollo, also known as Hrólfr, Hrolf the Ganger, Rolloun, was a Scandinavian Viking who raided England, Scotland, Flanders, and France, and his Nordic army laid siege to Paris in 885. After further events and negotiations, a part of Neustria in northern France was capitulated to the Vikings, and which became the duchy of Normandy with Hrolf as its first Duke. Future ducal and royal lines of France and England descended from the line of Rollo, and includes some of the famous kings of England such as William the Conqueror, Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, and Edward Longshanks.

Trivia[]

  • Hrolf the Ganger actually moves slower than a normal Berserk, but attacks twice as fast.
    • Hrolf's epithet, "the Ganger", which derives from his Old Norse name, Göngu-Hrólfr, can be roughly translated as "the Walker", from Old Norse gangr ("to walk"). Historically, due to his size, he could not ride any horse, but had to walk on foot. This is probably the reason for his slow moving speed.
  • When ordered to move, Hrolf responds with attacking voice clips, but when ordered to attack, he responds with moving voice clips.
