Howdahs (called Siege Elephants before update 6.0.878) is a unique technology available to the Delhi Sultanate in Age of Empires IV that can be researched at the Archery Range in the Imperial Age. It gives Tower Elephants +11 ranged damage against heavy units, and visually upgrades them to have Elite Crossbowmen in its howdah instead of Archers. It also provides Tower Elephants with +30% hit points and +4 ranged armor. Hence it enhances both offensive and defensive stats of the unit.
Although this upgrade does provide +30% hit points to Sultan's Elite Tower Elephants as well, it does not upgrade their ranged armor.
The research time of this technology can be further reduced by 50% if a Scholar is garrisoned inside the Archery Range at which it is researched. It is also granted for free to Mercenary Tower Elephants for the Byzantines after they are unlocked with Elite Contracts.
