| —Age of Empires IV description | ||
The Hospitaller Knight is a unique heavy melee infantry unit of the Knights Templar in Age of Empires IV: Knights of Cross and Rose. It is unlocked at the Barracks after selecting the Knights Hospitaller as the Commanderie ally in the Feudal Age. It is a stronger variant of the Man-at-Arms with an ability to heal friendly units.
Abilities[]
Heal (Passive/Active): Heals friendly units at ~9 hit points per second up to full health from a distance of one tile. This is equal to the standard 7 hp/s heal rate plus the inherent 30% boost obtained from Ageing up to the Feudal Age with the Knights Hospitaller. The ability can be targeted by right-clicking on a unit, or the nearest unit within a 5 tile radius will automatically be healed, as long as the Hospitaller Knight is idle. Targets in combat are healed 50% slower.
Unit comparison[]
The Hospitaller Knight fills a similar role to the Man-at-Arms due to its nearly identical statistics. They cost fewer overall resources, but with a higher emphasis on gold. The Hospitaller Knight has less armor than a Man-at-Arms in all ages, but higher hit points. Significantly, this makes it much more susceptible to Archers in the Feudal Age than the Early Man-at-Arms. They also qualify as a religious unit and gain an additional 40 hit points from Piety, ending with very high hit points for infantry.
The following table compares all heavy infantry options available to the Knights Templar (except for the Early Man-at-Arms, which is included simply as a reference). The table displays base stats, that is, Commanderie Age-up bonuses are not included, even for units that inherently benefit from them.

Tactics[]
The Hospitaller is a versatile unit which serves both as a medic between fights, and a front liner during fights. Compared to using a Monk as a healer, their lower gold cost can be advantageous, and since units which are fighting are only healed half as fast, it might be preferable to have the Hospitaller act as a fighter during combat, rather than as a healer. However, this also makes it somewhat unlikely for them to survive till the end of the encounter, so to act as a medic between fights, they need to be continuously retrained.
Despite being a religious unit, the Hospitaller cannot pick up Relics or capture Sacred Sites, but can heal a considerable amount. The Hospitaller Knight will always prioritize fighting if there are enemies nearby, hence they cannot be relied upon for healing during combat unless tasked manually. Hospitaller Knights placed on stand ground will heal nearby units if there is nothing to attack.

Dialogue lines[]
The Hospitaller Knight uses the same dialogue lines as the French Man-at-Arms. It uses the Castle Age dialogue while in the Feudal Age, since the French Man-at-Arms has no separate lines for the Feudal Age.
