The Hoplite appeared in two games of the Age of Empires Series, in Age of Mythology and Age of Empires. They are used to counter cavalry.
Age of Empires

Hoplites are elite Infantry units with a high amount of damage. The Hoplite can easily bring units down, but are relatively slow and vulnerable to archer fire. The Hoplites are best used in hand-to-hand combat. The Hoplite can be upgraded to the more powerful Phalanx, and finally the Centurion, the most powerful infantry unit. The Greeks have the fastest hoplites.
Hoplites and their sucessors are the most powerful non-siege units in the game.
Age of Mythology

In Age of Mythology the Hoplite is an Infantry unit unique to the Greeks and is trained at the Military Academy. Hoplites are best used to counter cavalry units and are relatively vulnerable to myth units and archers.
