“ | Strengthens Castles, Kreposts, and Donjons by providing +1000 hit points. | ” |
—Age of Empires II description |
Hoardings is a technology in Age of Empires II available at the Castle upon reaching the Imperial Age. Once researched, it increases the base hit points of Castles by 21%, making them even harder to take down, especially when combined with Masonry and Architecture. It also increases the base hit points of Donjons, which is the unique building of the Sicilians, by 44.444%, who also have access to Masonry (but not Architecture).
When this technology is researched, the effects of multiplicative effects like Masonry and Architecture applies on the total hit points obtained additively (base hit points and the extra 1,000), no matter if Hoardings is researched before or after them.[1]
Hoardings can be especially handy to players who plan to build Castles for warding off enemy intrusions or building them in enemy territory. Hoardings is even more beneficial for the Franks, Incas, and the Byzantines, who have special bonuses that apply to their Castles.
Castles with Hoardings, Masonry, and Architecture all researched will boost their hit point total to 7,028. For the Byzantines, a Castle with Hoardings boosts to 8,131 hit points due to their civilization bonus.

Civilization bonuses[]
Team bonuses[]
- Portuguese: Researching Hoardings is 25% faster.
Changelog[]
The Age of Kings[]
- Hoardings costs 400 wood, 400 stone.
- Hoardings gives Castles +1,000 HP. The order of research of Masonry, Architecture, and Hoardings matters, since the former are multiplicative and the latter is additive (hence researching Hoardings first and Masonry and Architecture later gives more hit points compared to the other case).
- Japanese: Do not have access to Hoardings.
The Conquerors[]
- With patch 1.0b, Hoardings costs 400 food, 400 wood.
- Hoardings gives Castles +21% HP. This change meant that the order of research of Masonry and Hoardings did not affect the final result. As a side effect, the technology provides +1,008 HP instead of +1,000.
The Last Khans[]
- Krepost added.
Lords of the West[]
- Donjon added.
Dynasties of India[]
- With update 81058, Hoardings also gives Donjons +44.44% HP. Donjons also gain +1,000 base hit points, similar to Castles, even though the percentages differ vastly.
- Japanese: With update 81058, they have access to Hoardings.
Victors and Vanquished[]
- Description of changed to: "Strengthens Castles, Kreposts, and Donjons by providing +1000 hit points.".
- Hoardings also gives Kreposts +38.5% HP, which is +1,001 hit points, even though the Bulgarians do not have (nor previously had) access to Hoardings.
History[]
“ | Men fighting from the top of sheer castle walls could not shoot or otherwise attack enemies at the base of the wall without exposing themselves to arrows. Castles were improved with hoardings, which were fortifications and crenellations that extended out from the tops of walls to protect defenders. They could now more safely attack men below or those climbing up. Hoardings made castles more difficult to capture. | ” |
Notes[]
- ↑ For example, an Imperial Age Donjon has 2,250 base hit points.
- If Hoardings is researched first, it has 3,250 hit points.
- If Masonry is researched subsequently, the hit points are increased by 10% to 3,575 hit points.
- If Masonry is researched first, 2,250 is increased by 10% to 2,475 hit points.
- If Hoardings is researched subsequently, it is not increased by 1,000 to 3,475, but the base hit points is increased by 1,000 and the effect of Masonry applies on this value, to again yield a total of 3,575 hit points.
- If Hoardings is researched first, it has 3,250 hit points.
