Historical Battle-only civilizations in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition are civilizations which do not appear in main gameplay, but only in Historical Battles. In most cases, they are derived from existing regular civilizations.
Barbary Pirates[]
The Barbary Pirates appear in the Algiers scenario as a playable civilization and as antagonists in the The Burning of USS Philadelphia scenario. They are very similar to the Moroccans. The unique units of the Barbary Pirates speak Kabyle language using the dialogue files of the Barbary Corsair, except for the Bedouin Horse Archer, who uses the dialogue files of the Mameluke. The Ottoman units speak Turkish. They are led by the brothers Hizir Reis and Oruc Reis.
Ethiopians[]
The Ethiopians appear in the Christopher da Gama's Expedition scenario. They are led by Ethiopian Queen Sabla Wengel.
Somalians[]
The Somalians are exclusive to the Christopher da Gama's Expedition scenario. They are led by Ibrahim al-Ghazi. When played in multiplayer or through the use of a mod, they use Ethiopian architecture.
Tatars[]
The Tatars appear in the Chuvash Cape scenario. Tatar armies are a mix of Chinese and Russian cavalry. When played in multiplayer or through the use of a mod, they use Indian architecture for Asian buildings, and Northern European architecture for European buildings, with the Ottoman Mosque model.
United States[]
The United States is exclusive to the Battle of New Orleans scenario. It is a different civilization to the other versions of the civilization. They can train Regulars (Musketeer counterpart) and Volunteers (Skirmisher counterpart) at the Barracks, and Grenadiers, Falconets, Culverins, Mortars, and Rockets at the Artillery Foundry. They are led by General Andrew Jackson.
Pirates[]
The Pirates are a band of Pirates and a Privateer appearing in the Battle of New Orleans scenario. They are led by Jean Lafitte and have a few tents, a Saloon, and a Privateer. If the player builds a Trading Post on the Trade Route next to his base in the southwest, Lafitte will grant three free shipments.
Moroccans[]
The Moroccans appear in the The Battle of the Three Kings scenario. They are identical to the Barbary Pirates, minus the capability to train Barbary Corsairs. They also differ in the Home City Cards available to them. The unique units of the Moroccans speak the Kabyle language using the dialogue files of the Barbary Corsair, except for the Bedouin Horse Archer, who uses the dialogue files of the Mameluke. The Ottoman units speak Turkish, and the Artillery Foundry units speak Portuguese. They are led by the Morroccan Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur.
Campaign-exclusive technologies are available in the The Battle of the Three Kings scenario. The "Berber Warfare" Home City Card enables Horse Breeding, Barb Horses, and Pillage at the Arsenal. The "TEAM Mosque Construction" Home City Card enables Moroccan Leather, Makhzan, Granadan Technology, and Saadian Madrasas at the Mosque.
Canadians[]
The Canadians are available in the Battle of Queenston Heights scenario. They mix United States (Sharpshooters, State Militia, the General's Inspiring Flag ability) and British features (Manor Houses, Redcoat Musketeers, and Dragoons). They are led by Militia Officer Roger Hale Sheaffe.
Trivia[]
- The Barbary Pirates could possibly have been intended to be playable in the Definitive Edition (outside of the Historical Battles and the Scenario Editor) due to the fact that they have unique military units and have a music theme, unlike other civilizations that appear in just one campaign scenario. However, the Barbary States, similar in some aspects, can be played normally outside of the Scenario Editor if the player revolts.
- Their music theme is named "BarbaryCoast.mp3" in the game files. The civilization's name was possibly Barbary Coast at some point of the Definitive Edition development.
- In the Algiers scenario, the Barbary Pirates can ship Ottoman units from their Home City and train Janissaries, Abus Gunners, and Mamelukes if a certain secondary objective is completed.
- Originally, the Barbary Pirates' Home City reused the same name as the Ottoman Home City, Istanbul. This was been fixed in update 10807, which renamed the Barbary Pirates Home City to Cherchell.
- The Ethiopian flag shown in the game is the Tricolor of Pennants that was used between 1881โ1889 by the Ethiopian Empire. However - as this design is non-rectangular - the Home City shipment icon, civilization selection screen, and post-game leaderboards all use a rectangular flag similar to the flag of Ethiopia used between 1897โ1914, without the "แ" on the central stripe.
- The Ethiopians are the only non-fully-playable civilization that has an AI personality or something equivalent, though most of her lines are tied to the scenario and not in reaction to what the player does.
- The Ethiopian civilization ended up being added to skirmish games in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - The African Royals.
- The Somalian flag is based on the flag of Adal Sultanate (1415โ1577).
- The Tatar flag is based on the flag of Khanate of Sibir (1468โ1598) from Wikimedia, but its design is highly speculative.
- The Tatars use a similar tech tree to the Chinese.
- The United States flag is the 15-star, 15-stripe Star Spangled Banner Flag. This version of the flag was adopted by the United States in 1795 to symbolize the admission of Vermont and Kentucky to the union, and during the War of 1812 its presence over Fort McHenry inspired the poem that would later become the United States' national anthem.
- This flag is also used by the United States playable civilization and by the United States in Act III: Steel since the Definitive Edition.
- With update 23511 and the introduction of the United States, the Volunteers were renamed to Revolutionary Sharpshooters, but preserve their original name in the Battle of New Orleans scenario.
- At the launch of the Definitive Edition, General Jackson was named American General.
- The Moroccan flag used in the game is the flag of the Saadi Sultanate (1510โ1659).
- Moroccans were considered as a civilization for The African Royals, but did not make it past the initial selection phase due to them being historically and in-game mechanically too close to Europeans.
