—Age of Empires IV description |
The Hisar Academy is a technology landmark available to the Delhi Sultanate in Age of Empires IV in the Castle Age. It acts as a Madrasa and grants 3 free Scholars upon completion. It constantly generates Food based on the total number of technologies researched.
Special ability[]
- Madrasa Influence, also referred to as Scholar Influence (Influence): As a Madrasa, the Hisar Academy generates a 12 x 12 tile influence area. All buildings except those that do not have any available technologies (such as Houses or Markets) extend the influence area by one tile beyond their footprint, and the influence area can be combined with that of other Mosques or Madrasas. The research speed at all buildings within this area is improved based on how many Scholars are garrisoned in any Mosque or Madrasa.
- Food generation (Passive): The Academy produces 1 food every 5 seconds for each technology researched, for a total of 768 food per minute with all 64 technologies researched (excluding Docks and the House of Learning). The House of Learning and Dock add 5 and 11 extra food every 5 seconds (60 and 132 food per minute), respectively, resulting in a total of 960 food per minute.

Strategy[]
The Hisar Academy incentivizes players to get less important technologies too just to increase its food generation. This is especially strategically relevant in maps with little water, but enough to build a Dock, as the player can build a Dock solely to get the technologies. It also rewards early Docks in maps where they are less commonly used.
The ability to research Dock technologies also makes the Hisar Academy much better on water maps, as the player would be researching the technologies anyway. The maps on which this is most relevant are maps where the player can also make use of the civilization bonus of Fishing Boats having a ranged attack, as enemy units go close to the shoreline or on the same terrain as ships. While the bonus says "Fishing Boats can defend themselves with a ranged attack and have 50% additional health," there is nothing preventing a player from using this offensively. In fact, Delhi Sultanate Fishing Boats have incredibly good stats. They cost less total resources than an Archer, but have a lot higher attack, hit points, speed, and Line of Sight, though they have a lower Rate of Fire and range. They also heal in the range of the Dock, can garrison in Docks to keep themselves safe and for surprise attacks, can be produced in the Dark Age, can repair each other and any other ships the player has, and fish like other Fishing Boats. The Hisar Academy provides a late-game payoff for employing this strategy, usually used in the early game, as the Docks can slowly research all the Dock technologies after they have nothing better to be doing due to the player having enough Fishing Boats.
The Hisar Academy greatly incentivizes players to do the already-common strategy of making multiple research buildings to make use of the Delhi Sultanate's free technologies which take a long time to research. The technologies from the buildings often cost more than the research building, meaning multiplying the research speed by making multiple research buildings easily pays for itself. This is also a much cheaper way to increase overall research speed than making Scholars to garrison in Mosques or Madrasas. A player needs more than 4 Scholars to double research speed, but it only takes 1 additional research building to double the overall, effective research speed. There is a slight downside that there is a higher delay for getting any payoff at all. Doing this strategy means the Hisar Academy scales up in food generation a lot quicker.
The Academy gives a substantial initial boost, giving 3 Scholars which can increase research speed and other things and being a Madrasa. This saves 450 wood, 1 minute of construction time (worth approximately 50 wood in lost gathering), about 1 minute of research time from not needing to be constructed, and 390 gold worth of Scholars. This means the initial boost is worth around 790 total resources, including the worth of the construction time.
The Hisar Academy synergizes with the House of Learning landmark, as it increases the food it generates.
As a result of producing a lot of food, it helps using high-food-cost units like Ghazi Raiders, Spearman, forward Villagers, and the Tower of Victory (as all the units it boosts cost a significant amount of food and it incentivizes investing in no-gold-cost units early).
It goes well with the strategy of using the House of Learning's Reinforced Foundations technology to use forward Villagers building Houses instead of Outposts. Houses take exactly a quarter of the time to construct, cost exactly half as much, and have the exact same amount of hit points by base, meaning they end up having +50% hit points compared to an Outpost with the technology. They also end up with the same range and garrison arrow damage as base Outposts, though 1 less range than Outposts with Lookout Towers researched. The best use of this strategy is using the fast construction to build Outposts near or even in a battle. The major downsides are cavalry cannot garrison in them, the Line of Sight is less, and Houses do not get emplacements like Outposts. This strategy costs mostly food, so it has strong synergy with the Hisar Academy.
