
Heavy infantry is a broad tag in Age of Empires III, being a subtype of infantry. They are usually good against cavalry and shock infantry, with a melee or low to medium range attack. In the game files, they are referred to as AbstractHeavyInfantry. They are vulnerable to artillery, light infantry (foot archers and rifle infantry), and counter-skirmishers.
There are 3 major tags related to heavy infantry:
- Musket infantry: Ranged heavy infantry (
AbstractMusketeerin the game files). - Hand infantry: Melee specialist infantry (
AbstractHandInfantryin the game files, except Urumi Swordsmen, which do not have the heavy infantry tag). - Grenade trooper (generally): Heavy infantry with Area of Effect damage, strong against other heavy infantry but contrast weak to cavalry (
AbstractGrenadierin the game files, except the Mounted Granadero, that is cavalry, and the Fire Thrower, that is light infantry).
The Arrow Knight is the only heavy infantry unit that does not have the above tags.

- The Pistolero, Puma Spearman, Jaguar Prowl Knight, Skull Knight, Tomahawk, Fusilier and War Club were introduced in The WarChiefs.
- The Dacoit, Ninja, Arsonist, Samurai, Ashigaru Musketeer, Yamabushi, Shaolin Master, Qiang Pikeman, Changdao Swordsman, Sepoy and Rajput were introduced in The Asian Dynasties.
- The Plumed Spearman, Bolas Warrior, Maceman, Carolean, Nizam Fusilier, Javanese Spearman and Regular were introduced in the Definitive Edition.
