—Age of Empires II description |
The Heavy Swordsman is a Scenario Editor infantry unit in Age of Empires II. The unit and its icon are based on the Broad Swordsman from Age of Empires.
In The Age of Kings, it was a hidden unit that would turn invisible when facing certain directions while standing, and used the icon of the Two-Handed Swordsman. During early development of the game, the Heavy Swordsman was intended to be a unit trainable at the Barracks and upgradable to the Two-Handed Swordsman.[1] Like many units at the time, it was given Age of Empires graphics as a placeholder.
The Heavy Swordsman was added to the Scenario Editor in The Forgotten, and no longer became invisible. The icon was replaced by that of the Broad Swordsman from Age of Empires. Since the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires II, the model of the Broad Swordsman from Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is used for the Heavy Swordsman.
Trivia[]
- The Return of Rome mode introduced an updated sprite of the Broad Swordsman with livelier animations, whereas the base game's Heavy Swordsman still uses the version from Age of Empires: Definitive Edition.
