Target one of your or your allies' Town Centers to summon and command Freyr's golden boar Gullinbursti to defend the area. Gullinbursti becomes much stronger each age.
—In-game description

Gullinbursti is a Norse Archaic Age god power in Age of Mythology: Retold - New Gods Pack: Freyr that is available to worshipers of Freyr. When invoked on the player's own or an ally's Town Center (includes Citadel Centers, but not Village Centers), it summons the giant golden boar of Freyr, which will guard the Town Center. The invocation also causes a shockwave that deals damage to enemies and knocks them back.

Effect[]

Summons the Gullinbursti, the giant heroic golden boar of Freyr, near a Town Center or Citadel Center owned by player or their allies. It also creates a shockwave in the spawn area, dealing damage to all units in an area of 6 (with multipliers of 2× vs. myth units and 0.5× vs. heroes) and knocking back human soldiers. The amount of damage dealt depends on the Age in which it is summoned:

When summoned, Gullinbursti protects buildings from enemy units by knocking them back with its tusks. It can also be sent to attack to enemy positions, but its movement speed will decrease the further away it gets from a friendly Town or Citadel Center. Once summoned, Gullinbursti lasts for the duration of the god power or until it is killed. As the player progresses through the Ages, Gullinbursti's summon duration and base stats will increase. For more information about the unit, see below.

Tactics[]

This section is most likely incomplete and may need expansion. You can help by adding to it.

It is a powerful early-game defense and can counter most rushes. The decaying speed when moved away from the invoked area makes it infeasible for offense, as the timer will usually expire before the unit can reach the enemy. The additional effect of damaging the struck enemy units (which further increases with Age-ups) and knocking them back is also highly useful, as it provides a brief window of time for the player's other units to surround and kill the most dangerous of the battered attackers, or knock away enemy melee units to expose their vulnerable siege units, etc.

Reuse of this god power is prohibitively expensive, so it should be used with caution. Opponents of Freyr may attempt to bait an early use of Gullinbursti and then attack with the main force once it expires, or attack another Town Center.

In team games, Gullinbursti can be used in tandem with Hades' Sentinels for added protection in the form of ranged fortifications or Isis' Monuments for protection against enemy god powers.

Unit[]

Divine hero. A radiant boar wielding Freyr's power, sent from Alfheimr to defend a Town Center for a limited time. His power and speed wanes the further he travels from the summoning point.
—In-game description

Gullinbursti is an Archaic Age Norse hero available to Freyr, introduced in Age of Mythology: Retold - New Gods Pack: Freyr. It is obtained by invoking the god power on the player's own or an ally's Town Center. It is a strong hero unit whose attributes increase every age. Its size and appearance also change with the ages.

Its speed increases up to 6.5 tiles per second when it is within an area 25 of the summoned building. However, its speed decreases by 0.0563 tiles per second for every tile it moves away from the summoned building's area, down to 2.27 tiles per second. Unlike other heroes, Gullinbursti cannot collect Relics, nor does it passively generate favor like Hersirs and Godis. It can quickly move around using a Greek ally's Underworld Passage.

Special ability[]

  • Tusk Sweep (Charged): Knocks enemy units aside, stunning them for 4 seconds and injuring them greatly. Knockback affects units up to weight class 8. Recharge time: 10 seconds. Damage is dealt based on current Age within a 2.5 radius:
Note: The ability is already on cooldown when Gullinbursti is invoked, and needs to recharge first.
  • God power resistance: It is immune to the following god powers:
  • Invoking Gullibursti knocks back units including cavalry but excluding heroes and myth units.

Diet -- fueled by peat and magic

Freyr, the brother of Freyja, had a chariot drawn by a boar that was not a living animal, but was forged by the dwarves Brokk and Eitri. Gullinbursti ('golden mane') had glowing bristles that lit up the dark. He could run faster than any horse, over sky and water. The dwarves manufactured the battle boar as a result of a wager with Loki over which family of dwarves could make the best gift for the Norse gods. Eitri placed a pig's hide in the forge, while Brokk worked the bellows. Loki took the form of a fly to bite Brokk and distract him from doing his work. Freyja also rode a battle boar named Hildisvini.

Trivia[]

  • The creature represented by this god power is also available as a trainable myth unit under Bragi named the Battle Boar.
    • The Battle Boar itself was originally named "Gullinbursti" during development, and is still referred to as such in its in-game help section.
  • This is the only god power in the game which has more than one icon, depending on the Age.
  • The creatures summoned in each Age are all different units rather than upgrades of a single unit, and are not automatically swapped if the player advances in Age while the previously invoked Gullinbursti has not yet expired.
