History[]
| “ | Guardhouses were placed outside castles to monitor anyone entering or leaving the grounds. The guardhouse was not a space for highly trained elite samurai to hang about; rather, it was typically manned by non-elite foot soldiers. Only three guardhouses from the Edo period remain today. One of them, Doshin Bansho, is located outside the castle of the Tokugawa Shogunate, right next to the Ōte-mon Gate, which was controlled by the soldiers that were stationed in the guardhouse. |
