This article is about the building. For the god power, see Goshinboku.

Respawns the most recently fallen myth units for whomever captures and controls it.
—In-game description

The Goshinboku Tree is a Japanese building that is created by invoking the Goshinboku god power at a target location. It is a divine tree that automatically respawns fallen myth units belonging to the player. Unlike regular constructible buildings, it is indestructible. It can be captured by units of any other player, including enemies, if none of the current owner's units or buildings are nearby.

Special ability[]

  • Goshinboku's Blessing (Passive): Collects the spirits of the player's most recently fallen myth units to resurrect them. Queues up to two spirits at a time; others are lost. Cannot revive scouts such as Kitsunes, tokens, or divinely powerful units such as Titans.

Whenever one of the player's Temple-trainable myth units is killed (not deleted), it is automatically added to the training queue of the Goshinboku Tree for no cost. Only two myth units can be added to the training queue of a Goshinboku Tree at a time, so if the number of myth units killed exceeds the queue space in the available Trees, the more recently fallen myth units will not be respawned. The respawn of a particular unit can be cancelled by clicking on its icon in the building's UI panel, in case the player wants to make room for another unit about to die. The time taken for the resurrection is dependent on the cost of the unit:

where,

Resurrection time of the myth unit in seconds
Food cost of the myth unit
Wood cost of the myth unit
Gold cost of the myth unit
Favor cost of the myth unit

It resurrects most normally-trainable land and flying myth units. It does not resurrect Dock units, those which are created on other special conditions without training, or even those which respawn at Temples. As such, it does not resurrect the following:

Mythology[]

Goshinboku translates to “sacred divine tree” in Japanese and refers to special, sacred trees where kami are believed to reside. They are typically found within or near Shinto shrines. One of the most popular trees associated with housing kami is the Hinoki cypress. A goshinboku can be identified by a distinctive sacred rope tied around its trunk, known as a shimenawa. These trees are highly protected in Japan, and it is strictly forbidden to cut them down or cause them harm.

Trivia[]

  • The Goshinboku Tree resembles a large Japanese cedar or Sugi (杉) wrapped in a shimenawa ritual rope, with flickering orbs of light flying around it, reminiscent of the kitsunebi (狐火), or "ghost lights" in Japanese folklore. When one of the controlling player's myth units dies, they release a similar ghost light which makes its way back to the Tree where the fallen unit was added to the queue.
    • These lights (literally: "foxfires") take their name from the Kitsune, who were believed to release such ghost lights to guide their way to secret nocturnal yōkai ceremonies and rituals, which often took place around ancient or sacred trees.
  • When a myth unit dies and can be added to the Goshinboku Tree's queue, a glowing spirit/orb emerges from the myth unit's corpse and travels to the Goshinboku Tree. The resurrection queue starts as soon as the unit dies, not when the spirit reaches the building.
  • The campaign unit Tanuki is also resurrected by the Goshinboku Tree.
