Heavy ranged infantry mercenary that inflicts area damage with its ranged attack.
—In-game description

The Giant Grenadier is a mercenary heavy gunpowder infantry unit in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean.

Overview[]

The Giant Grenadier is a heavy ranged infantry. It is effective against cavalry and Shock Infantry in melee combat, but vulnerable against Skirmishers and artillery.

It is similar to the Soldado due to being tagged as a Musketeer-type unit and a Grenade Trooper. In comparison, Giant Grenadiers have higher base attack and melee resistance, higher siege attack at longer range, and train slightly slower than Soldados, but cost only coin, and their ranged attack causes splash damage, which makes them effective to take down large groups of units. However, they can be taken down by long-ranged infantry like Skirmishers, Foot Archers, and artillery.

Due to being expensive, it is recommended to have a steady economy that allows the player to train Giant Grenadiers constantly. Additionally, they should be combined with melee cavalry to take down ranged infantry or artillery that can defeat Giant Grenadiers. If possible, artillery like Falconets or Heavy Cannons help Giant Grenadiers in siege against buildings.

Alternatively, players can obtain them after researching Royal Saxon Grenadiers, which delivers a Giant Grenadier with every new shipment. This is very useful if they are playing with Native American civilizations, which cannot train mercenaries on the Native Embassy; additionally, the Haudenosaunee and the Incas have Home City Cards that benefit infantry, which is effective if they combine Giant Grenadiers with their regular infantry units.

The Giant Grenadier speaks German using the German Heavy Cannon's dialogue files.

Trivia[]

  • The Giant Grenadier does not throw grenades in siege mode. Instead, it uses a hand mortar.
  • The Giant Grenadier is based on the soldiers of the Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 6, also known as Potsdam Giants or Lange Kerle ("long fellows" in German). They were called Giants due to being taller than average soldiers, as their required height was 6 Prussian feet (about 6 ft 2 in, or 1.88 m).
  • Historically, grenadiers were line infantry armed with muskets and hand grenades. They used volley fire and were specialized in shock and close quarter combat. However, by the 18th century, the grenadiers specialized in throwing hand grenades became less necessary, and the term referred to physically robust soldiers who led assaults, such as storming fortifications in the course of siege warfare.

History[]

The 17th-18th century Prussian Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm I had a peculiar obsession with tall men, and set about recruiting them from far and wide into a special regiment. This squad, colloquially known as the Potsdam Giants, became an elite group of line infantry. On several occasions, the Emperor even received tall men from neighboring nations for his private army as a diplomatic overture, and even attempted to breed them with tall women to create more giant soldiers. After Friedrich Wilhelm’s death in 1740, his son Friedrich the Great discontinued the practice and gradually incorporated the Giants into other, more standardized regiments.
