Tactics[]
Ge Halberdiers function very similarly to Hirdmen and Katapeltes in that they specialize in defeating cavalry. They can repel early cavalry raids or even kill any unsuspecting Kataskopoi that dare to venture within the vicinity of the player's base. In groups, Ge Halberdiers can even take down War Elephants. They are also decent against most siege weapons, but are weak against everything else, especially ranged soldiers. Similarly, they are also vulnerable to counter-infantry units like Hypaspists, Axemen, and Throwing Axemen. On the other hand, Ge Halberdiers have access to a variety of myth technologies that make them more useful when massed. Lastly, Fuxi's Ge Halberdiers gain a small boost to their attack damage through his Yang Blessing.
Xuannü allows all Military Camp units, including Ge Halberdiers, to be trained more quickly with a Training Yard installed. Chiyou grants Ge Halberdiers longer attack range and a 50% speed reduction against cavalry, while Rushou grants Ge Halberdiers extra damage, especially against myth units. Lastly, Huangdi reduces the cost of training Ge Halberdiers, boosts their hit points and hack armor, and allows them to deal extra damage and grant a lifesteal to nearby allied infantry upon death.
Dao Swordsmen are already decent against many units, thus fulfilling the Ge Halberdier's main role. While they do not have a damage bonus against cavalry, they have more balanced hack and pierce armor, higher hit points, and almost triple the base attack of Ge Halberdiers. However, Ge Halberdiers cost less gold, are faster, and have slightly better hack armor. As such, Ge Halberdiers are best used if an enemy is using an army full of cavalry or War Elephants.

History[]
“ | Chinese halberds called 'ge' evolved from the dagger-axe, a weaponized version of a harvesting scythe. They were a cheap means to outfit a massive army very quickly, usually drawn from peasant conscripts. However, these troops were by no means unskilled; Chinese polearm warfare was among the most effective on earth, as the long blades of these weapons allowed for effective slashing attacks which could not be achieved with typical spears or pikes. | ” |
