“ | Norse Gatherers can only collect resources and build farms. Use infantry to build buildings. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Gatherer is one of two Norse worker units, the other being the Dwarf, in Age of Mythology. Unlike other civilizations' villagers, Norse Gatherers (and Dwarves) cannot build or repair most structures; instead Norse infantry units (including the Hersir and Godi) do this.
Gatherers can be instantly converted into Berserks for the full price of a new Berserk. However, this wastes the resources spent on training the gatherer, so it is usually better to train Berserks from the Longhouse or the Town Center, unless there is a dire need.
Since Retold, Gatherers and Dwarves share a common "villager" build limit of 100.
Special ability[]
Go Berserk (Active, costs 30 food, 20 gold): Transforms into a Berserk.
Nature's Eyes (Passive, requires
Eyes in the Forest): Animals and natural objects within the unit's Line of Sight reveal their surroundings (30-tile radius) for 6 seconds.
Tasks[]
Gatherers can be assigned with the following tasks:
- Gather food from Farms and Berry Bushes
- Slaughter domestic animals then gather food from them
- Hunt wild animals and gather food from them
- Chop down trees and gather wood
- Mine gold
- Build Houses, Ox Carts, and Farms

History[]
“ | Norse Gatherers form the basis of your economy. Make sure you have enough Gatherers to generate a steady inflow of resources, but remember they are weak in combat and can only plant Farms. Norse infantry are used to build and repair all other buildings. The lands of Scandinavia, like those of Greece, were not great for agriculture and the growing season in the north is short. The villagers of the Norse, by necessity, were spread out in small bands that supplanted their limited crops with hunting, gathering, and fishing. The harsh climate and demanding life of the Norse forced them to become particularly good as craftsmen, explorers, traders, colonizers, and raiders. |
