Mythology[]

Freyr was the son of Njord, the Vanir god of the sea, and the brother of Freyja, the goddess of magic, love, and warfare. He was most famous for being a fertility god. Snorri Sturluson tells us: "[Freyr] is ruler of rain and sunshine and thus of the produce of the earth, and it is good to pray to him for prosperity and peace. He also rules over the wealth of men"

Freyr was one of the most worshiped Norse gods, especially amongst the common folk, and was most popular in Sweden - so much so that he was said to be the progenitor of a line of Swedish kings, the Yngling dynasty. He lived at Alfheim, which was given to him by the gods when he got his first tooth as a child. Despite primarily being a fertility god, Freyr's battle prowess was still highlighted throughout mythology: Tyr claimed in Lokasenna that "Freyr is the best of all the bold riders / in the courts of the Aesir".

Freyr possessed a ship named Skidbladnir, which was large enough to hold all the gods but could also be folded up into a pouch. He also had a beautiful golden boar named Gullinbursti that the dwarves crafted for him. His most precious possession was a magic sword that could fight by itself; however, he gave the sword to his servant Skirnir as a reward for helping him marry the jotuness Gerdr. This proved a costly decision: because he did not have his sword at the battle of Ragnarok, Freyr was killed by the giant Surtr.

This section is most likely incomplete and may need expansion. You can help by adding to it.

He speaks several lines in Arena of the Gods.

In the intro cutscene of scenario 11, alongside Kastor, Champion of Freyr, and Gaia:

Champion of Freyr: For my rescue, I give you thanks.

Now I must fly, for there are others who would seek to free Loki!
Kastor: Stop! If we work together, we can—
Freyr: Who interferes with my Champion?
Kastor: We have need of her. A war is brewing.
Freyr: War... You blood-spattered, glory-hunting lovers of war are a plague upon this world.

And to keep my peace, I shall turn fair weather to foul; the breeze to biting chill; gentle sunlight to burning flame.
Gaia: This fool of a god cannot see that we're on the same side!

During scenarios 11 to 20, he speaks these lines when he changes the weather as part of Freyr's Harsh Weather:

  • Spring:
    • Life rushes through the bountiful fields!
    • Do you need respite from the cold, mortal?
    • I think it's time for a change of weather.
    • The gentle warmth of spring is wasted upon you.
  • Summer:
    • Seek shelter, for the blazing sun will be as deadly as any storm.
    • You will fade like a pond beneath the scorching sun.
    • I shall bring the scorching summer sun to bear upon you.
    • This summer will be your last.
  • Autumn:
    • The season of reaping is upon us.
    • Feel the cold creep in, mortal.
  • Winter:
    • Tell me: do you like the dark?
    • I blot out the sun, along with your wicked hopes.
    • Frostbitten fields, chill winds, frozen lakes; oh, this will be quite the winter.
    • Blizzards, snowstorms, ice and biting frost!
    • The leaves have finished falling; now comes hateful darkness.
  • Mighty, Snowy, or Dark Winter (as part of Loki's Harsh Weather starting from scenario 15 onwards):
    • An ill omen, this long winter... I feel the chill winds of the end times.
    • What malice is this? The winter winds slip from my control!
    • How is Loki doing this? My hold over bitter winter is faltering.
    • I cannot thaw this winter - it is as if ice entombs my outstretched hands!

Upon being defeated, he says: You are like a plague upon bountiful fields.

At the end of scenario 15:

Freyr: You aided my Champion well. I see now that you are earnest in your opposition to chaos.

In the intro cutscene of scenario 20, alongside Loki:

Loki: Now I know I've been out of the loop, being imprisoned and all...

...but Atlanteans interfering in Ragnarok? This is bizarre.
Freyr: He does not stand alone.
Loki: Oh, Freyr... Now you of all gods should know that nature must run its course. That's all I want.
Freyr: You want endless snows, the death of gods, the destruction of the world?
Loki: Oho, you're afraid, aren't you?

Let's have ourselves a little brawl. This chaos will only hasten the end of days.

Trivia[]

  • In the artwork and in-game statues of Freyr, he holds a stag's antler. This likely references the antler he used to fight in the battle of Ragnarok, due to having given his sword to his servant as described in the mythology section above.
  • In the artwork, Gullinbursti with its golden bristles can be seen behind Freyr.
