—In-game description

The Fire Archer is a ranged soldier in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars, available to the Chinese at the Machine Workshop starting in the Classical Age.

Special abilities[]

  • Searing Point (Passive, requires Scorching Feathers): Projectiles reduce enemy unit armor. (Reduces 1% Hack armorhack / 1% pierce armor on every hit which resets after 5 seconds)

Tactics[]

This section is most likely incomplete and may need expansion. You can help by adding to it.

Fire Archers are not cost- or population-effective against most units, without the help of powerful myth technologies like Scorching Feathers and Southern Fire. They are best used as support troops and siege alternatives for Classical Age rushes.

History[]

The Chinese were the first to invent gunpowder; however, at first the inventors were unsure of how to implement the substance in warfare. Evidence suggests that fire arrows, along with firebombs, were among the first ever gunpowder weapons used in battle.

Even before the invention of fire arrows, the Chinese were renowned archers, and they placed significant emphasis on the practice. For example, archery was one of the Six Noble Arts of the Zhou dynasty. The mythological hero Houyi was also a renowned archer, famous for shooting nine of the ten suns of Chinese mythology. Archery remained a relevant skill in Chinese culture for centuries.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the mention of gunpowder in the in-game history section, the technology was not invented until the Song dynasty (with many developments of gunpowder weaponry made during the Jin–Song wars). However, the use of incendiary arrows (also called flaming arrows) was a common practice in archery during antiquity, with resin, oil, and sulfur being common materials applied to arrows. This is different from the historical fire arrows, which were rocket-propelled and utilized gunpowder. The in-game Fire Archer seems to use incendiary arrows rather than rocket-propelled ones.
