Freewheeling heavy infantry on an unauthorized military expedition. Constructs buildings or destroys them with dynamite.
—In-game description

The Filibuster is a revolutionary heavy infantry in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition that is unique to Baja California. It is an outlaw Musketeer that can construct buildings and use dynamite to blow up buildings.

Overview[]

Filibusters are essentially 3 population Musketeers with high siege damage, letting them take down buildings quickly. Seven Filibusters can one-shot a Villager.

Once the Exploitation card is sent, a player can use Filibusters to collect coin, so it is wise to place a Saloon on a forward gold mine.

Filibusters benefit from the outlaw combat card, but they'll quickly be outpaced by other Musketeer-type units if the game drags on. It is advisable to send the Advanced Saloon card and Advanced Arsenal card before revolting as Baja California. The Advanced Saloon card will let the player build two new Saloons, and the Advanced arsenal technology will prolong the combat effectivness of Filibusters. Filibusters benefit from the Socket Bayonet, Flint Lock, and Paper Cartridge Arsenal technologies. With these upgrades in place, they can hold their own against their Fortress Age Musketeer counterparts.

Further statistics[]

Trivia[]

  • The Filibuster portrait is a modified portrait of the Miner (which is reused by the Railroad Worker).

History[]

Filibusters are irregular soldiers who normally act without official authority from their own government, and are generally motivated by financial gain, political ideology, or the thrill of adventure. Unlike mercenaries, filibusters work for themselves, whilst a mercenary leader operates on behalf of others.
