This article is about the building in Age of Mythology. For the similar building in other games of the series, see Wonder.

The Wonder is a special building in Age of Mythology. It is a magnificent monument that can provide the builder another means to victory in Supremacy mode. Wonders are extremely expensive and take very long to construct. Its construction can be sped up with a Pharaoh or Priest empowering it, or by using the Imperial Examination god power. As soon as one is completed, a 10-minute countdown starts. If the Wonder is still standing at the end of the countdown, the player who built it is victorious, along with all of their allies.

Unlike in the previous installments, a completed enemy Wonder in Age of Mythology only reveal its location, but not the area around it, and is kept on the fog of war. Wonders are represented on the minimap as a yellow star icon.

Strategy[]

When the Wonder is built, the player and their allies should stop attacking enemies and send their troops, including Titans, to guard the Wonder instead, while it becomes the main target of the opponent attacks. It is important to perform a turtling strategy so the villagers (infantry for the Norse) should build walls and fortifications around the Wonder, and many god powers should be prepared to be used in order to protect the Wonder. However, one must be careful when using god powers that also affect the player's units, such as Meteor, Earthquake, or Great Flood, as it may do more harm to the Wonder or the units protecting it than good. For this reason, it is better to use god powers that don't affect buildings, like Frost or Lightning Storm.

If the enemy team builds a Wonder, the player and all their allies should be prepared for a lengthy siege, and many offensive god powers should be prepared in order to destroy the Wonder and all the defensive structures around it (for example, Tornado, Undermine, Deconstruction, Implode, etc.). It will be necessary to create a large number of siege units or units that deal high crush damage.

History[]

A distinguishing cultural characteristic of the great civilizations was architecture. Buildings in all parts of the world looked quite different and employed different construction techniques. In many cases, particularly noteworthy buildings stood as icons for the building civilization, marking it for all time as a culture that achieved greatness, if only temporarily. Examples of such cultural icons are the Pyramids at Giza and the Parthenon at Athens.

Trivia[]

  • Including the Lighthouse of Alexandria, 4 out of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World are in the game.
  • The Colossus of Rhodes, while not in the game, does have a reference with the inclusion of the Colossus myth unit.
  • Originally, the Egyptian Wonder was based on the Egyptian Grand Temple complex of Isis at Philae, before the Grand Sphinx was used, the Grand Temple complex of Isis was probably going to be her wonder.
  • Originally, Wonders were planned to be unique by civilization rather than by god.
  • Odin's Wonder is identical in appearance to the Tower of Odin.
  • On any game type (Supremacy, Conquest, etc.), the following characteristics can be observed with the AI whenever a Wonder has been built in a game:
    • Allied AI (including the AI who built the Wonder) will surround the Wonder with their army.
    • Enemy AI will send all of their forces to the Wonder to destroy it. As soon as a unit is trained from a military building, the AI will assign the unit to immediately head for the Wonder, resulting in an unorganized army.
