The Dwarf is one of two Norse villager units in Age of Mythology, the other being the Gatherer. Dwarves gather gold 20% faster than Gatherers, but gather food and wood 20% slower. They cost gold instead of food, and train slightly slower than Gatherers.
Other than being shorter in appearance, Dwarves are the same as Gatherers in all other respects. They cannot build anything other than Farms, and can be instantly converted into an Ulfsark for the full price of a new Ulfsark. However, this wastes the resources spent on training the dwarf, so it is usually better to train Ulfsarks from the Longhouse or the Town Center, unless there is a dire need.
Note: Even at maximum population, only 40 Dwarves can be trained.
Tasks[]
Dwarves can be assigned with the following tasks:
- gather food from Farms and berry bushes
- slaughter domestic animals then gather food from them
- hunt wild animals and gather food from them
- chop down trees and gather wood
- mine gold
- build farms (only)
Buildings[]
Dwarves can only build Farms (from the Classical Age) and cannot repair buildings.
God bonuses[]
- Worshiping Odin increases the Food gathering rate of villagers hunting animals by 10%.
- When worshiping Thor, the player starts with two Dwarves instead of Gatherers. Thor Dwarves cost -10 less gold (60 gold) and have increased wood and food gather rates, making them about equal for wood and only slightly slower for food when compared to Gatherers.
Note: Although using Thor Dwarves to gather wood/food is not a bad idea, one should consider the longer training time and still higher cost in comparison to Gatherers.
Technologies[]
Ox Cart provides:
- Hand Axe, Bow Saw, and Carpenters: +10% wood gather rate, +50% carrying capacity.
- Pickaxe, Shaft Mine, and Quarry: +10% gold gather rate, +50% carrying capacity.
- Hunting Dogs: +30% hunted food gather rate.
- Husbandry: +20% herdable food gather rate, 2ร food carry capacity (of all types).
- Plow, Irrigation, and Flood Control: +10% farm food gather rate.
Myth technologies[]
Worshiping certain gods enables players to research myth technologies that improve Dwarves.
- Pig Sticker: Dwarves do 5ร damage against huntables, gather food from hunted animals +10% faster. - Researched at the Ox Cart.
- Winter Harvest +20% farm food gather rate. - Researched at the Ox Cart.

History[]
โ | Dwarves (using the V in the plural seems to have originated with Tolkien) are a human-like race that evolved from maggots that lived on the body of the prehistoric giant, Ymir. They are known to live in great caverns and mines beneath the earth, are expert craftsmen, particularly with metal, and are known for their insatiable greed. Dwarves are still usually friendly with the gods and enemies of the giants. Many of the greatest magical items from Norse mythology, such as Thor's hammer Mjolnir, and the "Battle Boar" Gulinbursti, were manufactured by dwarves. | โ |
Trivia[]
- Though mythological in origin, Dwarves are not considered myth units in any aspect and share all properties of human worker units.
- When transformed by Ragnarok, Dwarves actually have an unique model variation properly reflecting their height. This is not the case when converting them into an Ulfsark, however.
- Dwarves lack the bonus attack against Carnivora that other worker units in Age of Mythology possess.
