Forgotten Empires was a mod developed by the Forgotten Empires studio (from which they derive their name as well) as an add-on to Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. It was released on 28 December 2012.
It was developed further developed into an official expansion Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten.

- Boyar: Slavic unique unit with the beta sprite of the Knight, similar to Joan of Arc.
- Condottiero: Anti-gunpowder Infantry available in the Barracks to the Italians and their allies.
- Elephant Archer: Indian unique unit, with appearance edited from the War Elephant and Composite Bowman.
- Genoese Crossbowman: Italian unique unit taken from Age of Chivalry: Hegemony, with appearance edited from the Hand Cannoneer.
- Imperial Camel: Indian unique upgrade to the Heavy Camel.
- Kamayuk: Inca unique unit produced in the Castle.
- Magyar Huszar: Magyar unique unit with sprite from the Lord of the Rings Mod.

- The population limit in the mod was 1,000 as opposed to 500.
- Hunting Dogs (40 food, 25 wood, 15 seconds at Mill): Hunters and Fishermen work 25% faster.
- Mongol Hunters work only 6.25% faster with Hunting Dogs due to their already existing faster hunting bonus.
