| This article is about the Age in Age of Empires IV. For other uses, see Feudal Age. |
The Feudal Age is the second Age in Age of Empires IV. It is characterized by smaller-scale skirmishes between mostly unarmored light units and building up an economy. The Feudal Age is followed by the Castle Age.
Tactics[]
For nearly all civilizations, the Feudal Age is effectively the first point in the game in which players can gain the ability to completely defeat their opponents through a landmark victory and is the Age in which a player's main strategy for the game begins to take shape. A combination of one or more of these tactics is typically seen beginning in the Feudal Age:
- An aggressive 'rush' strategy characterized by trying to defeat the opponent as quickly as possible or destroy their economy while minimizing investment into economic buildings or units
- A 'boom' strategy characterized by attempting to rapidly expand the economy through additional economic buildings (such as Town Centers or Markets) and units (Villagers or Traders) before either attacking the opponent or advancing to the Castle Age.
- A 'fast-castle' strategy characterized by focusing all resources on quickly advancing to the Castle Age to defeat the opponent with superior quality units and technologies
- Trying to win control of the water from the opponent by creating military ships and destroying their fishing economy.
- Establishing map control through defensive structures or military units to secure resources and delay a farm transition
Each one of these strategies has advantages and disadvantages depending on the civilization, and may require adjustments borrowing from other strategies depending on what the opponent is doing as well. For example, a defensive landmark such as the Kremlin or Barbican of the Sun may require a rushing player to focus on harassment rather than a full frontal attack, or a rush may force a fast castling player to build a few units or defensive structures of their own before advancing. In this way, hybrid strategies such as 'Feudal aggression into 2 Town Center', or 'semi-fast-castle' can emerge.
