Evzones are available starting in the Commerce Age, but compared with other ranged infantry (like the Crossbowman or the State Militia) they have more hit points, an increased food cost, and less ranged attack. Evzones are particularly strong against heavy infantry due to their higher attack multiplier, dealing 3× additional damage against these units, in contrast with the usual 2× multiplier from most light infantry units. Thanks to their increased hit points, Evzones are more durable in combat, but melee units that can approach them easily (like Hussars) or artillery units with longer range can take them down easily.
While Evzones have a build limit of 10 per House of Phanar palace, they can be massed easily with the Phanarion technology, which grants 1 Evzone for every 2 buildings owned by the player, up to a maximum of 80 Evzones. However, Phanarion requires an Athos Monastery built on a mine to be researched, and could be a problem if it is destroyed, as Athos Monasteries can only be obtained once per game.
For African civilizations, native warriors are upgraded automatically and for free.

History[]
“
The Houses of Phanar held considerable influence in the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans from the 16th century through the 19th century. During the Greek War of Independence (1821-29), units of evzones (so named for their prestigious traditional attire) rose to prominence, eventually becoming a mainstay in Greek armies. Evzones were known for their aesthetic (the fustanella kilt being especially peculiar for armies of the time), bravery, loyalty, and ferocity.
