Eupseong is a technology in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition that is unique to the Koreans and can be researched at the Castle. Once researched, it increases the range of Guard Towers and Keeps by +2.
It replaces Panokseon since update 42848.
Strategy[]
Eupseong synergizes well with the free tower upgrades Koreans get automatically upon advancement to the next age. With the increase in range, Korean towers can attack units from further away and take the enemy down before they get too close. Notably, with all range upgrades at the Blacksmith also researched, it allows Korean arrow towers to outrange Bombard Cannons and Dromons without Siege Engineers (and Artillery or Cilician Fleet) and match the range of Bombard Cannons and Dromons with Siege Engineers (or Artillery or Cilician Fleet), and Cannon Galleons without Siege Engineers (or Artillery). This significantly increases their defensive capabilities, especially on water maps, where it is virtually impossible to bombard the shoreline without Elite Cannon Galleons. Also, if used offensively, Koreans should establish defensive buildings around the enemy base as early as possible to disrupt their economy. Thanks to the cheap cost of the technology, it is very easy to justify if using even a small number of towers. Note that the Blacksmith archer attack upgrades are just as important to towers, while also affecting ranged units.
Team bonuses[]
- Portuguese: Researching Eupseong is 25% faster.
Changelog[]
The Conquerors[]
- Towers have +1 range in the Castle Age, and another +1 in the Imperial Age.
The Forgotten[]
- Panokseon introduced as the Koreans' unique technology in the Castle Age.
Definitive Edition[]
- With update 42848, Panokseon was merged in Elite Turtle Ship upgrade, essentially making it free, and removing the unique technology. Consequently, the tower range bonus was converted into the unique technology Eupseong.
History[]
Eupseong (Korean: 읍성, Chinese: 邑城) can be translated as a 'city fortress'. Korean fortresses have been constructed since the Three Kingdoms of Korea period and developed a unique and distinct fortress tradition. Almost 2,400 mountain fortress sites have been found in Korea.
Development[]
Korean towers already received free upgrades on top of +1/+2 range in the Castle/Imperial Age. This made their tower play quite oppressive. It was also paired with the fact that Castle Age Turtle Ships were fairly common, but the need for two technologies (Elite upgrade and Panokseon) made their use in later parts of the game rarer. The developers decided to simply swap the roles - the tower bonus became a technology, and the technology became free as part of the Elite upgrade (unlike Berserkergang, which later became free entirely).
Consequently, despite having resource cost (as opposed to the formerly being free), it offers +2 range at an earlier stage (i.e. in the Castle Age). This is not a problem on most maps, since the investment of a Castle to get the technology is also substantial.
