This article is about the unit in the PC game. For the unit in the handheld video game, see Einherjar (Age of Empires: Mythologies).

Myth unit. Slow-moving unit that can boost the speed and attack of nearby units with a horn blast. Good against human soldiers and buildings.
—In-game description

Slow-moving unit that can boost morale with a horn blast. Strong against buildings.
—In-game description

The Einheri (plural: Einherjar, named Einherjar before Retold) is a Norse Classical Age myth unit available to those who worship Heimdall.

Special ability[]

  • Horn Blast (Charged): Blows his battle horn to inspire nearby warriors to move faster and deal more damage. (Allied human soldiers, non-Titan myth units, and heroes within an aura of 10 range gain +50% attack and +50% movement speed for 5 seconds, which gradually weakens until the effect ends. Recharge time: 20 seconds.)
  • Nature's Eyes (Passive, requires Eyes in the Forest): Animals and natural objects within the unit's Line of Sight reveal their surroundings (30-tile radius) for 6 seconds. (since Retold)

Further statistics[]

God bonuses[]

  • Loki: May randomly spawn near units as they deal damage since the Classical Age.

Myth technologies[]

Specific[]

  • Gjallarhorn: Upgrades Einherjar to Giant-killer Einherjar, granting +10% hit points, +25% damage, and +5 seconds duration of Horn Blast effect.

Strategy[]

Einherjar have an average attack compared to other myth units, though their high armor makes them hard to kill. Like some other myth units, they have a decent crush attack so can be used to destroy buildings. They come into their own when they are in a group, because their morale-boosting special ability becomes especially useful. If the group has several Einherjar, the attack boost can be sustained even longer. Loki players who worship Heimdall then Bragi can combine the Einheri's morale boost with the Flaming Weapons god power to give nearby human soldiers a truly devastating attack.

Einherjar are very slow, so units that are outmatched can typically just run away. Their special attack leaves them open to attack. As such they function best in formation with other types of units instead of fighting solo, although their horn blast also deals a minor amount of damage to enemy units.

Changelog[]

  • The unit is named Einherjar (plural: Einherjars), has 3.2 speed, a 3× attack multiplier vs. myth units, and takes 3 population.
  • Its charged attack grants +50% attack to all nearby friendly units. It also damages nearby enemies and wild animals in radius 10 with 5 hack damage (0.1× vs. heroes).

The Titans[]

  • Einherjars have 3.0 speed, a 2× attack multiplier vs. myth units, and a 0.5× multiplier vs. heroes.

Tale of the Dragon[]

Retold[]

  • The unit is named Einheri (plural: Einherjar) and takes 2 population.
  • The Einheri's ability grants +50% attack and speed boost only to nearby friendly human soldiers, non-Titan myth units, and heroes. It does not damage nearby enemy or wild units or buildings.
  • Einherjar gain +20% hit points and attack each in the Heroic and Mythic Ages. They further gain +100% hit points, +100% attack, and +20% speed in the Wonder Age.

In-game dialogue[]

The Einheri speaks Icelandic (the closest living language to Old Norse), using an edited version of the Norse military dialogues.

Mythology[]

Scientific name -- Homo sapiens
Size -- about 7' tall
Diet -- copious amounts of human food, especially boar meat

The Einherjar were the dead heroes gathered by the Valkyries and taken to Asgard where they lived with Odin. The Valkyries culled only the best and most heroic warriors. While living in Asgard, the Einherjar feasted all night and battled all day, with any wounds being magically healed. Thus they prepared endlessly for the time when Odin called for them to fight with the gods at Ragnarok.
