Target a friendly building to surround it with earthen walls.
—In-game description

Earth Wall is a Chinese Classical Age god power in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars that is available to worshipers of Houtu. When invoked on a friendly building, it creates a circular earthen wall that surrounds the building in an area of radius 40 to keep enemies trapped within or to keep them out. The erected walls start damaged and slowly build up, and pass through any obstructions, such as other buildings, trees, and even deep water. The walls remain until eight sections are destroyed, upon which all remaining sections also collapse.

The god power can be invoked on any friendly building, excluding walls, gates, Farms, Sentinels, Tartarian Gates, and building foundations. Non-destructible buildings like Peach Blossom Springs, Plenty Vaults, Healing Springs, and Hesperides Trees are also not valid targets of the god power. Among god power buildings, Earth Wall can be invoked on Lures and Underworld Passages, allowing for quick placement in enemy territory in team games.

Since update 18.27100, only four Earth Wall rings can be summoned per player at one time, with a global limit of 24. If the god power is invoked a fifth time, the earliest ring still standing will collapse.

—In-game description

The Earth Wall is a Chinese wall that is created surrounding a targeted friendly building when the eponymous god power is invoked. It starts at 25% hit points and slowly builds up, being vulnerable whilst under construction (taking four times the damage when under construction), but stronger than regular walls when completed. The walls are effectively gates, as they recede into the ground when the player's units are near, allowing them to pass through.

Tactics[]

Earth Wall is mainly used defensively to protect an allied base from attack. Ideally, it should be invoked on the player's own Town Center as soon as possible, as the wall slowly builds itself and is vulnerable to attack. However, once it is fully completed, it becomes much more impervious than regular walls. Players can install further defensive fortifications like Watch Towers and Baoleis to bolster their defenses. Earth Wall can also be invoked on an allied player's buildings to protect their base. This is especially useful when invoked on an allied Town Center belonging to either Hades, Isis, Freyr, Gaia, or Nüwa, as they all have strong defensive advantages. Earth Wall becomes even more effective as a defensive tool when combined with Hades' Sentinels, Isis' Monuments that provide god power shields, or Freyr's Gullinbursti.

When invoked, the Earth Wall passes through any obstructions, such as trees or buildings. Keep in mind that it is impossible to build on the Earth Wall itself, even though it can pass through buildings. While the wall begins to build itself, it can also launch any units into the air, even allied units, although they take no damage this way.

Earth Wall can also be used offensively. As demonstrated by the official preview video, combining Earth Wall with Zhurong's Blazing Prairie and a set of buildings to bait an enemy into attacking can entrap groups of enemies into a deadly rain of fire with no means of escaping the power's radius. This tactic is available to Nüwa and Shennong builds that select both gods while aging up.

Mythology[]

Houtu summons a solid earthen wall to enclose an area. The wall's hitpoints start low, but rapidly increase as Houtu constructs them. Whilst gaining hitpoints, the walls take considerably more damage from attacks, but once fully constructed they are much stronger than regular walls. Each time a segment is destroyed, the entire wall takes damage.

The oldest walls in ancient China were built using rammed earth. This process involved compacting a mixture of soil into a formwork, which was then removed, leaving a standing structure. Over time, the compressive strength of the rammed earth increased, resulting in a durable and practical construction.

Trivia[]

  • Based on a pre-release preview (see below) and an unused description in the string table, Earth Wall was originally going to be castable on open areas in addition to friendly buildings.

Note: Unlike in the preview below, in the release version, Earth Wall cannot be invoked on open ground, but requires a friendly building.
