History[]
Dionysius was a Phocaean admiral of the Ionian fleet at the Battle of Lade in 494 BC. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, he worked his men so hard to prepare for battle that on the eve of the engagement, they refused to fight, resulting in a Persian victory and paving the way for the suppression of the Ionian Revolt. After the battle, he became a pirate.
