Tactics[]
Dao Swordsmen are well-armored and have a lot of hit points, thus being able to take on a variety of units. Having decent hack armor, they can hold their own against cavalry and infantry alike. Their high pierce armor also allows them to endure some attacks from ranged soldiers and fortifications, albeit not as much as the Atlantean Destroyer. Being inexpensive and fast to train, Dao Swordsmen are easy to make a large army of, especially when trained from a Military Camp with a Training Yard installed. However, they can still be countered with sufficient numbers of ranged soldiers, as well as counter-infantry units like the Hypaspist, Axeman, and Throwing Axeman. Being slow, they are also vulnerable to attacks from fast-moving units, especially fast myth units like Yazis, Centaurs, and Anubites. Because of this, Dao Swordsmen are best used in combination with other human soldiers, such as Ge Halberdiers for dealing with cavalry, Fire Archers for taking out infantry and buildings, Wuzu Javelineers and White Horse Cavalry for dealing with ranged soldiers, and heroes for countering myth units.
Dao Swordsmen benefit from a variety of myth technologies that make them even more useful. Xuannü allows Dao Swordsmen trained from Military Camps to be produced more quickly with a Training Yard, while Rushou reduces their pierce vulnerability and grants them extra damage, especially against myth units. Lastly, Huangdi reduces their cost and increases their hit points, hack armor, and attack damage, along with granting a 30% lifesteal to nearby allied infantry upon death.

History[]
“ | The Chinese Dao Swordsman is an inexpensive, fast-training unit whose armor makes it thrive in combined arms forces. Historically, these infantrymen were predominately conscripted soliders[sic] between the ages of 23 and 56. Chinese armies were famous for their size – commanders could swiftly mobilize and logistically support vast numbers of men to carry out military campaigns. On one occasion, Wang Mang levied 300,000 men to suppress a rebellion against his new regime in 9 CE, and the Chinese also deployed several hundred thousand infantrymen (alongside 50,000 cavalrymen) against the Xiongnu in 119 BCE. |
