The Counter Infantry Rifling improvement is a Technology in Age of Empires III available from the Fortress Age at the Arsenal. This Technology increases Light Infantry multipliers against Heavy Infantry by one, normally from 2 to 3, offering a 50% increase in damage against Heavy Infantry. This makes Light Infantry units more effective against Heavy Infantry to being able to slaughter Heavy Infantry much easier than without the upgrade.

The improvement is incredible powerful and is a must in Fortress Age for Skirmishers to be able to effectively counter Musketeer units, which can be game changing. Be careful if your opponent has this improvement to keep your Heavy Infantry out of range of their Light Infantry units.

Skirmishers armed with rifles (Skirmishers, Abus Guns, Cassadores, Jaegers, Strelets, Cherokee, Cree) do more damage to heavy infantry (Musketeers, Halberdiers, etc.)
—In-game description

Counter Infantry Rifling is a technology in Age of Empires III that can be researched by European civilizations at the Arsenal; Haudenosaunee and Lakota can also research it at the Longhouse and the Teepee respectively once the New Ways Home City Card has been sent. Once researched, it increases the attack multiplier of Skirmishers and Skirmisher-like units (Abus Guns, Cassadores, Strelets, Cherokee Riflemen, Cree Trackers, Klamath Riflemen, Navajo Riflemen, and Jaeger) against heavy infantry by 1.0x.

Use cases

Counter Infantry Rifling is especially useful for civilizations that have Royal Guard upgrades for their Skirmishers (Germans and French), or those that have a unique replacement for Skirmishers (Abus Guns and Cassadores). It helps them counter heavy infantry even more effectively without improving their general stats.
