“ | Fast Cossack hand cavalry from the Wild Fields with a powerful lance attack that charges while fighting. Can dismount. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Cossack Daredevil (Rider) is a European outlaw in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean. It is available on the Carpathians, Courland, Dnieper Basin, Eurasian Steppe, Finland, France, Lithuania, Pripet Marshes and Vistula Basin maps.
Overview[]
The Cossack Daredevil is an outlaw with fast speed, lower population cost than similar outlaws, and low attack, which is compensated with its faster Rate of Fire. Unlike other melee cavalry units, it has multipliers against heavy cavalry and Shock infantry, making it slightly better than fighting against light infantry, however, due to its resistance against ranged damage, the Cossack Daredevil proves to be also useful against them.
Like other Outlaws, Cossack Daredevils are more useful in the Commerce Age and become weaker as the game progresses, due to being outclassed by upgraded standard cavalry and mercenaries.
Special abilities[]
- Dismount: Dismount its horse to become an infantry unit. Takes 4 seconds.
- Lance Charge (requieres 15 hits to charge up): The Cossack Daredevil charges at the enemy with a lance, which has a range of 2 on an Area of Effect of 2, an deals 34 hand damage (×1.25 against heavy cavalry, ×1.15 against shock infantry).
Civilization differences[]
- The Lakota can also get Cossack Daredevils through the "Outlaw Band" and "Bandit Gang" Home City Cards, in the pool of random outlaws shipped.
Revolutions[]
- Argentina and the Maya can also get Cossack Daredevils through the "Outlaw Band" (for Argentina) and "Bandit Gang" (for Maya) cards, in the pool of random outlaws shipped.
Dismounted[]
“ | Heavy ranged Cossack infantry from the Wild Fields armed with a pistol and sharp saber. Can throw a deadly knife during fights and mount to turn into hand cavalry. | ” |
—In-game description |
The Cossack Daredevil has the ability to dismount its horse to become an infantry unit similar to the Musketeer, getting a ranged attack, reducing its speed, changing its resistance against ranged damage for melee one, and hand attack multipliers against heavy cavalry and Shock Infantry. It has a slightly lower attack and lesser Line of Sight than Musketeers, but a faster movement speed, Rate of Fire, and slightly higher hit points.
Since the Cossack Daredevil is always trained as cavalry, players must use its "Dismount" ability manually if they want to turn them into heavy ranged infantry.
As an outlaw, it is more useful in the Commerce Age and becomes weaker as the game progresses, due to being outclassed by standard Musket infantry, and mercenaries.
Special abilities[]
- Mount Mount its horse to become a cavalry unit. Takes 4 seconds.
- Knife Attack (requieres 15 hits to charge up): The Cossack Daredevil throws a knife to hit an enemy, which deals 18 hand damage and has a maximum range of 16.

History[]
“ | The term 'Cossack' originated in the Cuman language, meaning "free man", and was used in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to describe refugees in the Ukrainian steppe, where they developed a distinct social and military culture. A special unit of registered Cossacks formed the Zaporozhian Army, which fought on behalf of the Commonwealth against Tatar and Turkish incursions near the Black Sea in exchange for land and privileges. However, due to increasingly unfavorable economic policies levied by the Polish government, several Cossacks began to instigate uprisings against their Polish overlords during the early 1600s. The Poles quashed these rebellions, but the Cossacks continued to thrive with relative autonomy, often participating in Russian and Moldavian affairs. The Cossacks would greatly contribute to the development of the modern Ukrainian national identity during their pervasive struggle against the Poles and Russians. Following the demise of the Zaporozhian Sich in 1775, the Cossack system collapsed; various attempts to revive the regiments occurred over the following several decades, but the results were only marginal at-best. | ” |
