| − | Chain mail was an improvement over scale mail, being less penetrable and boasting better durability. Chain mail was generally expensive as metal was in low supply and high demand. Chainmail was often worn over thick woolen padding, and it itself was worn under a suit of plate armor for knights. Being flexible, chain mail remained in use long after the widespread use of platemail owing to its ability to protect the joints (elbows, knees, groin, neck etc.) something the inflexible plate was not designed to do. |
