Myth unit. A mighty giant who pounds the ground to knock back his enemies. Good against human soldiers.
—In-game description

Centimanus (plural: Centimani, named Heka Gigantes before Retold) is a multi-armed Atlantean myth unit available starting in the Mythic Age in Age of Mythology: The Titans through the worship of Helios.

Special attack[]

  • Linear Shockwave (Charged): Jumps and pounds the ground, causing 40 hack damage and 50 crush damage (2× vs. myth units, 0.25× vs. heroes), and knocking nearby enemy units (up to weight class 6) away. Also leaves them vulnerable to attack. Recharge time: 20 seconds. The shockwave causes permanent terrain deformation.

Further statistics[]

God bonuses[]

  • Kronos: Returns 20% of its resource cost upon death, +1 Centimanus spawns when advancing to the next age.
  • Oranos: +4 Line of Sight.

Myth technologies[]

  • Titanomachy (Helios): Upgrades four-handed Centimani to six-handed Wardens of Tartarus, granting +50% hack and crush damage for regular attacks. (Since Retold)

Age bonuses[]

  • Wonder Age: +100% hit points, +100% damage, +20% speed.

Tactics[]

Centimani are deadly against human soldiers and buildings alike. Their special attack is to smash the ground, creating a shockwave, which deals damage to all enemy units within the Area of Effect and deforms the terrain. It is useful for knocking away groups of units attempting to overwhelm them. Heroes are also affected by this ability, and though they take much less damage, it does allow the four-armed giants to take them on in a pinch. On the other hand, the Centimani will only last so long, since they, like all myth units, receive bonus damage from heroes and deal much less damage against them. For Oranos worshippers, the god power Shockwave can be a valuable addition when attacking with Centimani, as it will further disperse enemy troops, making it easier for the player's own units to pick out their targets.

The most remarkable aspect of the Centimanus is its four arms. When it takes a swing, it does not hit once, but twice per second. Since it also deals crush damage, they can cause severe damage to buildings much faster than any siege weapon. Two Centimani alone are enough to take out a fully-upgraded Town Center. Despite their slow speed, they fare better than siege weapons as the previously-mentioned ability can help protect them from any attackers. Furthermore, Centimani are strong against enemy siege weapons and many other myth units, most especially those with low hack and/or crush armor.

Once upgraded with Titanomachy, Centimani gain a pair of extra arms for a total of six and are renamed Wardens of Tartarus. They are even stronger than regular Centimani and can easily demolish enemy buildings, myth units, and siege engines alike without much support. Care should still be taken, though, to protect them against heroes and stronger myth units.

Heka Gigantes are destructive against human soldiers and buildings alike. Their special attack is to smash the ground, causing minor earthquakes, which deals Area of Effect damage to all enemy units within the shockwave and deforms the terrain. Mythology[]

Scientific name -- Gigans centimanus
Size -- 15' tall
Diet -- carnivore, mostly humans

Centimani are strong against human soldiers, sending them flying with their many-handed strikes. They are weak against heroes.

One hundred arms and fifty heads grew out of the shoulders of the centimani - or hekatonkheires, as they were known in Greek. They were the sons of Oranos and Gaia and were so imposing that Oranos ordered them imprisoned in Tartarus. This incurred the wrath of Gaia, who incited her son Kronos to overthrow his father and take his place as ruler of the cosmos.

Trivia[]

  • The original name of the unit, "Heka Gigantes", is a modern modification of the name of the source mythological creature, Hecatoncheires, which meant "hundred hands". In the modified name, Heka is short for Hecaton (meaning a hundred) and Gigantes means Giants, so the name of the unit turns out to be "hundred giants". In Age of Mythology: Retold, the name of the unit is Centimanus, which is the Latin translation of Hecatoncheires.
