Cao Cao is a hero cavalry unique unit in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - The Three Kingdoms. He is available at the Castle to the Wei once the Imperial Age is reached. He is a powerful unit, only 1 of which can be owned at a time, and cannot be converted. He has a unique appearance and uses unique voice lines.
Special ability[]
- The Emperor's Decree (passive): Increases nearby military units' attack speed. (Its aura reduces the reload time of nearby friendly military units, except siege weapons, in a range of 10 by approx. 8.75%)

A separate unit is used for Cao Cao in the campaign. Compared to his trainable form, he has slightly different attributes as well as an additional active ability.
Special abilities[]
- The Emperor's Decree (passive): Increases nearby military units' attack speed. (Same as trainable version's)
- Poetic Inspiration (active): He has a special active ability which temporarily boosts nearby units of the player:
- The ability is activated by clicking its icon in the unit's command panel.
- It takes 3 seconds to wind up.
- It increases the melee and pierce attack and armor values of units in a range of 10 by +2 for 15 seconds.
- It has a 90 second cooldown, which starts recharging after the ability's duration.

- The ability icon of campaign unit Cao Cao says ่ฉฉ, which translates to "poem", referring to his famed poetry.
