“ | Highly mobile and durable ranged unit effective against all cavalry. | ” |
—Age of Empires IV description |
The Camel Archer is a unique light ranged cavalry unit available to the Abbasid Dynasty in Age of Empires IV. It can be trained at the Archery Range starting in the Feudal Age. It possesses an aura that reduces the damage of nearby enemy Cavalry units by 20%.
The Camel Archer is also available to the Byzantines as a mercenary unit.
Ability[]
- Camel Unease (passive): Enemy horse-riding cavalry units within a 5-tile radius deal 20% less damage.
- Camel Support (passive, requires Camel Support): Allied infantry units within a 5-tile radius receive +2 melee and ranged armor.
Tactics[]
Camel Archers can be considered a fast, high-stat alternative to the Archer. With an attack bonus against light melee infantry, they counter Spearmen easily, and do enough damage with a high Rate of Fire that they threaten most units that do not have significant ranged armor. Their high base damage and speed allow them to even counter Men-at-Arms quite well. For all their advantages, they are very expensive and slow to mass.
Despite their Camel Unease ability, which reduces incoming damage, Camel Archers are still primarily countered by Horsemen, which are faster and have an attack bonus against them. Javelin Throwers are also a threat due to their range, armor, and attack bonus, as are War Elephants and Tower Elephants, due to their high hit points and ranged armor. While Camel Archers can defeat almost any other ranged unit one-on-one, especially Horse Archers, they are so expensive that they can be countered cost-effectively by massed Archers in the early to mid game, especially since they get outranged. This disadvantage diminishes somewhat in the late game, where population efficiency matters more, but is still a factor.
Because of these weaknesses, Camel Archers are often paired with Horsemen, especially in the early game. Their Camel Unease means that Abbasid Horsemen can win against enemy Horsemen as well as archers, and Camel Archers can counter enemy melee infantry. This combination is susceptible to heavy cavalry, though, so it needs additional support past the Castle Age, with units like Camel Riders, Spearmen, or Lancers.
For tactics applying to all units with the Camel Unease debuff, see Camel Unease.
