โ | Ranged Cavalry with a Lasso ability. Good against cavalry. | โ |
—In-game description |
The Californio is a revolutionary ranged cavalry in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition that is unique to the California revolution for the Mexicans and via the Bear Flag Revolt for the United States, and replaces the Revolutionary. It attacks with a lasso that snares enemies and can gather from animals and Haciendas.
Overview[]
Californios are light cavalry effective against heavy cavalry and shock infantry, but vulnerable against light infantry. They have a ranged attack that deals splash damage and snares enemies, and a hand attack without multipliers, in a similar manner to Mapuche Bolas Riders. However, they cost only food and one population space, and don't have a build limit, which turns them into an easier and cheaper unit to mass.
Due to their lack of multipliers in ranged combat and their lower hand attack, Californios are not as well suited to take down artillery units as other light cavalry, but due to taking less damage from these units, and being massed easily, they can handle Falconets or Culverins relatively easy when players have a large amount of them.
Once the "Ranchos" Home City Card is sent, Californios can gather food from livestock and huntables, and work on Haciendas to produce resources or Cows, but at half the speed of Settlers.
For the United States, Californios can be obtained once the player chooses the California Federal State to age up to the Industrial Age and sends the "Bear Flag Revolt" Home City Card, which turns all Settlers into Californios, fulfilling the role of the Revolutionary. Contrary to European and the California revolutions, "Bear Flag Revolt" works in a similar way to Flemish Revolution for the Burgundians, with Settlers being replaced by Californios in the map, but still available for training at the Town Center, gaining a massive army by momentarily sacrificing the player's economy. Unlike the former, it does not allows Californios to be trained for the United States, so players must be cautious if they decide to ship this Home City Card.
