This article is about the Federal State in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. For other uses, see California.

California is an Industrial Age Federal State in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, available to the United States. As soon as the player advances to the Industrial Age by choosing California, a Covered Wagon appears at the Home City shipment point and the Town Center build limit is increased by one, and the following Home City cards will be added into the U.S. player's deck:

Card Description
California Gold Rush Ships 1 Gold Prospector Wagon; Town Centers spawn Settlers automatically every 38 seconds instead of training them
Bear Flag Revolt Turns all Settlers into Californios; Replaces the General's Inspiring Flag ability with Inspiring Bear Flag, which spawns 6 Honcho The Pet Grizzly ; Costs 1,000 food, 1,000 wood, 1,000 coin

Strategy[]

For players that want a booming strategy in mid- to late-game, California is the best option for all Industrial Age federal states. It is also a good option for a Fast Imperial Strategy, and allows the United states to have something similar to a revolution, as they lack a real revolution like Europeans or Mexico. California is a Federal State which focuses on villager production, as it ships one Covered Wagon, increases the Town Center limit by +1, and gives the California Gold Rush federal card, which enables Town Centers to spam Settlers automatically and freely (but it also increases their training time).

California is a federal state that has a self-contained combo, as the player can recover its economy easily after using the Bear Flag Revolt federal card with their extra Town Center and the California Gold Rush federal Card. It is also a federal state that makes an interesting synergy with Texas (Imperial Age) and New Hampshire (Fortress Age), as the extra Factory from New Hampshire Manufacturing and the Texan Forts federal card will allow the player to train most of their units for free (if the Factories are used for training Artillery).

As California increases the Town Center limit by +1, the player may also use a deck that improves Minutemen, as they can be called out from Town Centers.

Recommended shipments[]

  • 1 Covered Wagon, TEAM Louisiana Purchase, Missouri River Expeditions: The more Town Centers with California, the better.
  • Pioneers: Before or after getting free Settlers from California Gold Rush, giving them extra hit points is a good idea.
  • Any economic improvement for villagers.
  • Irish Immigrants: this card can be used for a fast rebooming after using the Bear Flag Revolt; otherwise it can be used before to increase rapidly the number of Settlers and then using Bear Flag Revolt.
  • British Immigrants: Houses can train Settlers, which takes twice as long. Great for a Bear Flag Revolt combo, as it allows a faster economic recovery.
  • Oklahoma Black Mesa: Ships 1 Coal Prospector Wagon and 5 Gunslingers; Gunslingers can gather coin from mines;
  • Tammany Festival (Pennsylvania): The Coureur des Bois will count for the Bear Flag revolt. Tammany Festival also offers access to Cree Tanning (which improves Californio and Minutemen hit points by 5%) and Cree Textile Craftsmanship (which reduces the cost and build time of all buildings, including Town Centers).
  • German Immigrants: Settler Wagons count for the Bear Flag revolt.
  • French Immigrants: Coureurs des Bois count for the Bear Flag revolt; also, all villagers get better stats.
  • Plymouth Settlers (Massachusetts): Ships 300 food and 1 Native Scout; all existing Town Centers spawn 3 Pilgrims, which is great for a fast economic recovery after using the Bear Flag Revolt, especially if all covered wagon shipments have been sent.
  • Medicine: Villager training time reduced, which partially circumvents the training time penalty after getting California Gold Rush.
  • TEAM Alaska Purchase: Ships 6 Polar Bears; Existing Town Centers spawn 1 Silver Prospector Wagon. Considering that California furthers increases the Tow center limit, this synergizes nicely if the player needs more coin in the middle to late game.
  • Virginia General Assembly: Ships 1 State Capitol Wagon; The next technology researched at the State Capitol (except Spies and Blockade) is free; State Capitol build limit +1. This eases the creation of Covered Wagons while increasing Town Centers hit points, thanks to the technologies available at the State Capitol.
  • Land of Lincoln (Illinois): Inspiring Flags' Area of Effect and Line of Sight increased to 70, and now also increases the hit points of friendly units by 5%. Synergizes with the Bear Flag ability from the Bear Flag revolt federal card.
  • Texan Forts (Texas): Free Forts spawn units in batches instead of training them. Spawn rate 15% slower.
  • Overmountain Settlers (Tennessee): Villagers get +12 ranged attack; natural resources last 25% longer; ships 4 Settlers.
  • Factory shipments, including New Hampshire Manufacturing (New Hampshire): Factories can sustain the economy while the player uses the Bear Flag Revolt. The United states always gets 1 Factory and Robber Barons by default when aging up to the Industrial age.
  • Kentucky Coalfields (Kentucky): Ships 2 Coal Prospector Wagons. Synergizes with California Gold Rush and TEAM Alaska Purchase.
  • Virginia Plan (Virginia): Gives 2 Home City shipments, which can be used for getting Bear Flag Revolt and then California Gold Rush in a fast succession.
  • Slater Textile Mill (Rhode Island): Gives 30 food or 20 wood (selected randomly) for every existing Settler and Fishing Boat; Land economic units cost -30 food; Fishing Boats cost -20 wood.
  • Culpeper Minutemen (Virginia): Levy/Conscription global cooldown -50%; Minutemen hit point degeneration rate -50%; Each Town Center spawns 6 Minutemen.
  • Minutemen Companies: Ships 10 Minutemen; replaces Levy with Conscription.
  • United States Marines: Upgrades Minutemen into Marines (Minuteman that no longer lose hit points over time, with +1,000% siege attack, +2.0 multiplier against artillery, +3.0 multiplier against ships, and a long-ranged anti-ship attack, +8 Line of Sight, and +14 XP train and kill bounty).
  • Long Rifles: Minutemen get +4 Line.
  • United States Army: Minutemen get +15% hit points and attack.
