Byzantium is a Real World random map introduced in Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. It depicts the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor, two areas divided by the Aegean Sea.

—In-game description |
Both mainlands on the map are divided by the Aegean Sea, which is loaded with small islands. Stone and gold are plenty, with multiple islands guaranteed to contain them. There are also lots of fish throughout the map.
Byzantium can be played similar to Archipelago, with players securing island after island to steadily exploit the resources, while also denying them from the enemy.
Environment[]
The European part of the map has typical environment with grassy lands and Deer, Wolves, Wild Boars, and Sheep. The Asian part has the same wildlife, but the land is sandy, and some palm woods and mountains are scattered across the land.
The islands on the other hand are mostly barren, except for a few of the larger ones, particularly Crete, yet tend to contain substantial Stone and Gold Mines, as well as enough space to construct Docks and a few other structures.
