This article is about the buildings in Age of Empires II. For the armor class, see Armor class: Building. For buildings in other games of the series, see Building.
Buildings prev

The constructable buildings of Age of Empires II are best divided into the Age where they become available or by use. Some buildings are unconstructable, i.e. they cannot be built by the player in a regular game. They are found only in the Scenario Editor or provided beforehand in a campaign scenario, special map, or certain random maps, like the capturable Trade Workshops in Aftermath.

The appearance of the buildings is the same for all civilizations in the Dark Age (with the exception of Mining Camps and Lumber Camps which have their own appearance per architecture set and keep it throughout the game). Starting in the Feudal Age, it changes into one of eleven possible architecture sets, depending on the civilization and its real-life geographical area. Buildings change appearance again in the Castle Age, and in the Imperial Age, Town Centers, Markets and Universities update their appearance one last time.

Buildings can be constructed if there is no enemy building or unit present at the location of building foundation. Town Centers have to be built on 4×4 tile terrain which has the same height. It is the only regular building in the game which requires flat terrain for construction. Docks may only be built in shallow water or on shallows, next to the coast. Gates can be built if there is wall foundation or a wall piece already exists under the gate foundation. If there are gaia animals or units of the player present at the location of a building foundation, they will move away automatically once the villager reach the foundation. Farms are the only buildings visible to opponents when their foundations are placed (at 1 hit point). This makes them prone to enemy attacks, and any single attack at this point destroys them, which is a loss of 60 wood for the player. Buildings cannot be constructed on Rocky terrain. Buildings receive +20% damage if they are built on cracked terrain.
