“ | An army is only as powerful as the economy that supports it. Challenge yourself to expand your booming economy as quickly as possible. | ” |
—Description |
Booming is one of the two possible second scenarios of The Art of War in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. As the name suggests, it tests the player's skill in booming their economy.
Intro
As your army grows, so do your responsibilities. Not only must you look after your soldiers, but also after their families. It is of great importance that your people are fed, that your population grows, and that your towns increase in size.
Sun Tzu says: 'The command of a large force is the same principle as the command of a few men: it is merely a question of dividing up their numbers.'
An army is only as strong as the economy that supports it. A large army requires a large population and a surplus of food, gold, and other resources. Show me that you understand this important lesson.
Video instruction
Booming is a common strategy in team games, especially on closed maps such as Black Forest or Arena. It means building a strong economy before a powerful military. Booming makes you vulnerable until you reach the Imperial Age, but if executed properly, this strategy will allow you to overwhelm your enemy with large armies!
The key to booming is ensuring constant production of Villagers. Ideally, about half your total population room should be villagers. To achieve this, you must build multiple town centers and ensure that they are always training new villagers. This requires a large amount of resources, especially food and wood, so finding the right balance will be important. You can also improve the resource gathering rate of your Villagers by researching economic technologies at the Town Center, Lumber Camp, Mill, and Mining Camp. These technologies are important, so do not ignore them.
Apply these lessons and your empire will bloom.
Scenario instructions
Main objectives
- Train 100 Villagers as fast as possible.
- Advance to the Imperial Age.
Hints
- If you are having a trouble with this challenge, observe your ally – he has done this before.
- Building additional Town Centers increases your Villager production. Keep building them until you have three or four.
- Make sure that your Town Centers are always training new Villagers. Build Houses to keep pace with your Villager production.
- Use rally points to ensure that your newly-trained Villagers immediately began working.
- Build a lot of new Farms. You will need the food for Villagers and for the Imperial Age research. You can also automatically reseed your Farms by selecting a Mill and clicking on the button to the far right of the command tab (located in the lower left of the User Interface).
- To advance to the next age, you will need two Castle Age buildings such as a Monastery, University, or a Siege Workshop. A Castle alone also satisfies the requirement.
- Buy and sell resources at your Market to balance your economy when necessary.
Scouts
Your scouts report:
- You have just reached the Castle Age in a peaceful location. You are free to concentrate with your economy.
- On the other side of the map is an allied base (2, Yellow). They will also try to boom, so you can watch their strategy.
Medals
- Gold: Complete the scenario in 10 minutes
- Silver: Complete the scenario in 13 minutes
- Bronze: Complete the scenario in 18 minutes
Strategy
Follow the voice-over's instructions, making sure to build at least 3 Town Centers to minimize the time used to train Villagers. Food should be the player's top priority due to the 100-villager requirement, but gold will also be needed to transition to the Imperial Age.
It might be better to build a Monastery and either a Siege Workshop or University rather than a Castle, as wood will be in greater supply and the buildings themselves will be faster to build. That being said, the 20 extra population from the Castle will reduce the risk of hitting the population cap.
