| —Age of Empires IV description | ||
The Blacksmith is a building in Age of Empires IV that can be built starting in the Feudal Age. It is available to all civilizations except the Japanese, which have the Forge instead.
The Blacksmith contains technologies that improve the attack and armor of most units except siege engines. In addition to infantry and cavalry, as specified in the in-game description, these technologies can affect Religious Units, Villagers, Ships and Emplacements.
Abilities and influences[]
Blacksmith Influence (Influence,
Ottomans only): Blacksmiths generate a 10 x 10 tile influence area. Military buildings within the influence of a Blacksmith have +20%/+30%/+40% production speed per age starting in the Feudal Age. This can be improved to +100% in the Imperial Age with the Istanbul Observatory. The influence area is fixed and is not extended by other buildings.
Available technologies[]
Generic technologies[]
Technologies in the same line are chained. The attack and armor technologies do not apply to siege engines. The armor technologies do not apply to ships. Additionally, gunpowder units do not benefit from regular attack upgrades either.

- Military Academy is unavailable to the Ottomans because of their Blacksmith and University influence civilization bonus
- Siege Engineering is free from the Dark Age for the Abbasid Dynasty and Ayyubids, and hence does not appear in the technology tree

- They have 2,100 hit points instead of 1,500
- They cannot research ranged attack and defense improvements such as Steeled Arrow or Iron Undermesh line. Instead, these are researched at the campaign-only building called the Arsenal
