The Black Bear is a huntable animal in Age of Mythology: Retold - Immortal Pillars, a Treasure guardian and pet in Age of Empires III, and a predator in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

Age of Empires II[]

The Black Bear is introduced in update 141935 for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. It is the weakest of the three Bears in Age of Empires II, the others being the Brown Bear and the Polar Bear.

Age of Mythology[]

Villagers can hunt wild animals for Food. Black Bears will attack any nearby villagers.
—In-game description

In Age of Mythology: Retold, the Black Bear is a huntable predator introduced in Immortal Pillars. It can be seen on a few Chinese-themed maps, such as Bamboo Grove and Great Wall, while others feature Brown Bears in their place. They also appear on several Japanese-themed maps. As with the Brown and Polar Bears, Black Bears will attack any nearby workers on sight. However, compared to their Brown and Polar counterparts, Black Bears are weaker and have lower hack armor but provide more food.

History[]

Scientific name — Ursus thibetanus
Size — 88-276 lbs
Diet — Omnivorous

The Black Bear is widely distributed across Central Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. Compared to the grizzly bear, it is smaller in size and is more adept at swimming and climbing trees. Like the grizzly bear, it is also omnivorous and hibernates during the winter.

The Black Bear is known for the crescent-shaped white patch on its chest, which is why it is also called the 'Moon Bear.' Due to its poor eyesight, it is colloquially referred to as the 'Blind Bear' in China.

Treasure guardian[]

The Black Bear is a carnivorous treasure guardian that is featured in Age of Empires III. The Black Bears have a size of around 6 or 7 feet, and are found on North American maps. They are weaker than their larger cousins the Grizzly Bear and the Polar Bear which are some of the strongest Treasure guardians. They can be considered low to medium strength, due to their low number of hit points with an average attack. Additionally, ranged Heroes can kite them with great ease, reducing their potential damage greatly.

History[]

Scientific Name: Ursus americanus
Approx. Size: 130 lb. (female); 380 lb. (male)
Diet: Fruits, grasses, roots, nuts, herbs, insects, fish, carrion

The black bear is the most common bear in North America. They live in a variety of habitats, preferring forests with an abundance of undergrowth that provides them with food, shelter, and protection from their rare, but fearsome, predators. Black bears scale trees to escape threats. Humans and other bears, even other black bears, are the chief predator of black bears.

In colder climates, the black bear enters true hibernation, but in warmer ranges the bears do not reach the depth of hibernating sleep, though they will sleep for extended periods of time in the cold months.

There are sixteen subspecies of black bear. One, the Ursus americanus kermodei, is a white, but not albino, subspecies that lives in the Pacific Northwest and is referred to as a Spirit Bear in some native traditions. Ursus americanus emmonsii, the glacier bear, has gray and white hairs in its coat giving a striking blue appearance to its coat.
