|This article is about the the wild animal in Age of Empires II. For other Bears in different games of the series, see Bear.|
It has 25 hit points and holds no food, but attacks Villagers (and even some other units) on sight.
A single Bear can kill a Villager (except for Magyar Villagers) if it lands the first hit, but will die to anything stronger, even a Villager with the Loom upgrade. They are found primarily in European maps.
- The Bear has the appearance of a Brown Bear, which is present in Age of Mythology as a huntable animal, and is in turn conspecific with the American Grizzly Bear, which appears in Age of Empires III as a Treasure Guardian. However, Eurasian brown bears tend to be smaller and less carnivorous than Grizzly Bears.
- According to the fifth Design Document of Ensemble Studios (dated 17 July 1998), the Bear was considered to replace the Wild Boar as the dangerous huntable animal in the vanilla version. Bears were also envisioned as being able to feed on Farms, Berry Bushes, and Shore Fish, which would reduce the food they could provide for Players.
